"Zirkulationszeit" ist eine Serie von einundzwanzig Blättern, die thematisch an bis in die Jahre vor 1950 zurückreichende Erfindungen anknüpfen und insoweit eine Art intimen und gleichzeitig verbindlichen bildnerischen Rechenschaftsberichtes darstellen. Intim, weil das Medium der Druckgraphik kaum dazu taugt. Wirkungen des Demonstrativen und Spektakulären zu erzielen, wie sie für so viele Äusserungen von beuys charakteristisch sind. Verbindlich, weil ein gedrucktes Blatt ein Grundmass an Bestimmtheit enthält, das aus der Technik selber resultiert ; eine Radierung oder eine Lithografie mögen so unbekümmert und vorläufig anmuten wie die flüchtigste Zeichnung : Ihre Abhängigkeit von einem Initialprodukt und ihre Serieneigenschaft geben ihnen etwas eigentümlich Definites. Das schliesst ihre Qualität als ästhetische Objekte ein. Beuys hat immer wieder auf die Relativität des ästhetischen im Rahmen seines "erweiterten Kunstbegriffes" hingewiesen und genügend Proben einer die herkömmlichen Schönheits- und Dauerhaftigkeitserwartungen missachtenden Gesinnung geliefert. Er hat freilich die Bedeutung des ästhetischen niemals prinzipiell bestritten oder aus seiner künstlerischen Praxis ausgeklammert. Ästhetisches hat für ihn Geltung, wenn es Ausdruck unmittelbarer Sensibilität ist - einer Ur-Sinnlichkeit, die sich im Gestalten selbst erfährt und die ihre Gegenstände als Instrumente zur Vergegenwärtigung von Wandlungen und Wandelbarenbegreift, statt sei auf irgendwelche normgerechten Nenner zu bringen. "Informationen von ästhetischen Produkten", hat er 1968 in einem Interview gesagt, "brauchen keine Begriffe. Aber weil heute shcon die Kinder im naturwissenschaftlich-positivistischen Materialismus erzogen werden, liefere ich Theorie und Begriffe mit. Ein begabter Mensch aber versteht spontan" ; und : "Natürlich gelten auch für miche noch die alten ästhetischen Kategorien wie Raumordnung und Mass. Aber

The early watercolors of Joseph Beuys are numbered among the treasures of international public and especially, private collections. The viewer is struck by their aesthetic appeal - displaying the highest artistic sensitivity - as well as by the creative richness and conceptual and emotional depths that are revealed in these works. They show a profoundly contemplative and spiritual pictorial world from whose filigree structure Joseph Beuys drew essential correlations and concepts for his later work as a political artist. Drawing and painting watercolors helped him to gain a comprehensive awareness of his view of the world and man, and it also gave him the possibility of freely forming his colors from this liquid element. Created in the late forties and the fifties, these pictures are unparalleled in the art of the time and truly avant-garde. They established Joseph Beuys's reputation as one of the most important postwar artists, long before he entered the arena of public controversy with his revolutionary sculpture.
