Hoe lang is de kust van Noorwegen? Hoe beter je meet, hoe langer hij wordt! Dit vreemde effect wordt verklaard door het feit dat de kustlijn eigenlijk een fractal is. fractals zijn meetkundige objecten, net zoals cirkels en lijnen, maar dan extreem grillig. In de natuur komen fractals overal voor, bijvoorbeeld in de structuur van een varenblad of van een bliksemschicht. Wiskundig gezien zijn fractals fascinerende figuren. Niet alleen omdat ze vaak prachtige plaatjes opleveren, maar ook omdat ze onze meetkundige intuïtie op z'n kop kunnen zetten. In dit boekje worden de soms vreemde eigenschappen van fractals bekeken. Dit deel van de Zebra-reeks gaat over de beroemdste stelling uit de wiskunde: de Laatste Stelling van Fermat. In 1637 schreef de Franse wiskundige Pierre de Fermat in de marge van een Grieks wiskundeboek: "De vergelijking Xn + yn = zn, met x, y, z en n positieve gehele getallen, heeft geen oplossing als n>2. Ik heb hiervoor een waarlijk spectaculair bewijs, maar helaas is deze kantlijn te smal om het te bevatten". Honderden jaren hebben wiskundigen geprobeerd deze stelling te bewijzen. Alle pogingen bleven tevergeefs tot in 1993 Andrew Wiles de (wiskunde) wereld verbijsterde met de mededeling dat hij het probleem had opgelost. Hij had het bewijs gevonden! In dit boekje wordt de geschiedenis van deze stelling behandeld, beginnend bij Pythagoras en eindigend met de oplossing.
