Now, in his most controversial book, John Dominic Crossan shows that this traditional understanding of the Gospels as historical fact is not only wrong but dangerous. Drawing on the best of biblical, anthropological, sociological, and historical research, he demonstrates definitively that it was the Roman government that tried and executed Jesus as a social agitator. Crossan also candidly addresses such key theological questions as "Did Jesus die for our sins?" and "Is our faith in vain if there was no bodily resurrection?" Ultimately, however, Crossan's radical reexamination shows that the belief that the Jews killed Jesus is an early Christian myth (directed against rival Jewish groups) that must be eradicated from authentic Christian faith.

In kaum einem anderen christlichen Text des zweiten Jahrhunderts werden die Juden derartig häufig und aggressiv beschuldigt, für den Tod Jesu verantwortlich zu sein wie im Petrusevagelium (EvPetr). Diese antijüdische Tendenz ist in der bisherigen Forschung häufig erwähnt, aber kaum eingehender untersucht worden. Die vorliegende Arbeit schließt diese Lücke und bietet eine ausführliche, narratologisch fundierte Analyse aller jüdischen Figuren des EvPetr. Das Evangelium wird dabei Vers für Vers kommentiert und die Charakterisierung der jüdischen Figuren innerhalb der Erzählung herausgearbeitet. Ausgehend von diesen Ergebnissen wird die Judendarstellung des EvPetr mit anderen erzählenden Texten des zweiten Jahrhunderts verglichen und dadurch theologiegeschichtlich kontextualisiert. Die Arbeit leistet damit einen wichtigen Beitrag für das Verständnis des Petrusevangeliums und das Verhältnis von Christentum und Judentum im zweiten Jahrhundert. The notably negative presentation of the Jews is a frequently raised topic of discussion about the Gospel of Peter, but this phenomenon has not been examined in detail until now. This book offers the first detailed narratological analysis of the depiction of the Jews in the Gospel of Peter and examines it in the context of theological history.
