Le 8 Mars 1890, au Trinity College de Cambridge, un ethnologue de trente-six ans, James George Frazer, achève et signe la préface de l’œuvre en deux volumes à laquelle il travaille depuis le printemps précédent. Cette première version du Rameau d’Or sera, comme on sait, suivie de plusieurs autres, qui porteront cette « étude séparée » sur « la règle, jusqu’ici inexpliquée, de la prêtris d’Aricie » aux dimensions monumentales de la troisième édition (1911-1915) en douze volumes. Il nous a semblé intéressant de marquer, par une rencontre scientifique, le centenaire — à quelques mois près — de la première parution du Golden Bough. Moins peut-être pour l’œuvre elle-même qui, après avoir nourri plusieurs générations de chercheurs, s’est trouvée ensuite progressivement délaissée, que pour ce qu’elle représente : l’acte fondateur de l’anthropologie culturelle moderne.
