Abstract

The intensification of human activities, the growing demand for animal proteins due to the population explosion and organized poaching (ivory, pangolin scales, etc.) are leading to increasing pressure on the wildlife of Central African forests. To respond to these threats, strategies are being put in place at the national and regional levels. Effective wildlife management within certified concessions contributes to the overall objective of sound and sustainable management of Central Africa's forest heritage. This guide is an operational tool for Central African loggers. It presents in a pragmatic and illustrated manner the process of developing and implementing a wildlife management plan, starting with the legislative and regulatory frameworks to be respected and ending with the evaluation of its performance. The main wildlife management and conservation measures to be implemented are described in thematic sheets. A model wildlife management plan is presented, which proposes a hierarchy for the implementation of these different measures. This book aims to improve the practices of forestry operators in terms of wildlife management and to accompany them in a process of certification of legality or sustainability.

Abstract

"Animals are increasingly recognized as fit and proper subjects for historians, yet their place in conventional historical narratives remains contested. This volume argues for a history of animals based on the centrality of liminality - the state of being on the threshold, not quite one thing yet not quite another. Since animals stand between nature and culture, wildness and domestication, the countryside and the city, and tradition and modernity, the concept of liminality has a special resonance for historical animal studies."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Abstract

This book is an extended argument for abandoning the species rank. Instead, the author proposes that the rank of "species" be replaced by a pluralistic and multi-level view. In such a view, all clades including the smallest identifiable one would be named and studied within a phylogenetic context. What are currently called "species" represent different sorts of things depending on the sort of organisms and processes being considered. This is already the case, but is not formally recognized by those scientists using the species rank in their work. Adopting a rankless taxonomy at all levels would enhance academic studies of evolution and ecology and yield practical benefits in areas of public concern such as conservation. KEY FEATURES Proposes the replacement of restrictive species concepts with a pluralistic view Suggests abandoning the formal taxonomic rank of "species" Considers zoological, botanical, and microbiological aspects of the species level Deals with practical issues such as conservation, inventories, and field guides.

Abstract

The University of Coimbra, with more than 730 years of history, has a vast accumulated, material and immaterial heritage, which reflects all periods of history and scientific research in Portugal. The universal value of this immense collection, in particular of the biological collections and libraries, calls upon the University of Coimbra for the effort to preserve it, but also to disseminate and value it. In the conviction of knowledge to be of all and for all, we revise ourselves in the certainty that Open Science is indispensable to a more informed and more aware society of the Planet it inhabits, contributing to make it more human, more just and more democratic. The illustrations reproduced here were taken from several works kept by the library of the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Coimbra. Thus, it was also our purpose to make known the rich and wide collection of the University of Coimbra, using books for one of its purposes: learning and a taste for science.

Abstract

Abstract

From flying squirrels on high wooded plateaus to hanging gardens in redrock canyons, the Intermountain West is home to some of the world's rarest and most fascinating animals and plants. Creatures of Habitat details many unique but little-known talents of this region's strange and wonderful wild inhabitants and describes their connections with native environments. For example, readers will learn about the pronghorn antelope's supercharged cardiovascular system, a brine shrimp-powered shorebird that each year flies nonstop from the Great Salt Lake to Central Argentina, and a rare

Abstract

The essays collected in this volume apply an interdisciplinary approach to explore aspects of the relationship between animal and human in late antiquity. With a focus on ways that anthropozoological connections were defined in the emergent Christian religious discourse of the epoch, the authors contribute to our understanding of a thematic area largely neglected in previous research.

Abstract

The art history of South Asia covers a time span of roughly four and a half thousand years. During this period, a vast number of animal stone sculptures has been produced, ranging from the pre-historic period till today and covering a great variety of motifs and imagery in different regions and religious traditions. Even so, the number of studies devoted to these animal sculptures has remained extremely limited. The present book aims at filling this knowledge gap. With this richly illustrated book, the first of its kind, Van der Geer offers a comparative study of the ways in which various animals have been depicted and a lucid analysis of the sculptors’ treatment of their “models”: living animals. The art history of sculptured animals is contextualized with a description of the use of animals as can be read from ancient texts, archaeological evidence and contemporaneous culture. In doing so, parallels as well as differences in style or iconography are highlighted, elucidating the variety of animal depictions across regions, religious contexts and through time. The corpus of discussed material ranges from Indus seals, stupa panels and railings, monumental temples from North and South India, non-religious palace and fort architecture to loose sculptures in museum collections.
