Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The eastern, largely subtropical KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa has a varied geology, climate and topography that ranges from high mountain peaks to beaches lapped by the Indian Ocean, so presenting a vast diversity of habitats that support a rich and diverse flora. Aloes are well represented throughout KwaZulu-Natal, with four genera [Aloe L., Aloiampelos Klopper & Gideon F.Sm., Aloidendron (A.Berger) Klopper & Gideon F.Sm. and Aristaloe Boatwr. & J.C.Manning] and 49 infrageneric taxa occurring in the province. The species range from trees that can reach a height of 20 m, through large, iconic single-stemmed plants, to miniatures of only a few centimeters tall. Fourteen of the aloes of KwaZulu-Natal are endemic and eleven near-endemic to the province. This paper presents a complete floristic treatment of the aloes of KwaZulu-Natal in the form of a synoptic review. Included are an identification key to the aloes that occur naturally in the province, morphological descriptions, notes on habitat, conservation status and threats to the survival of each taxon, species-level distribution maps and images of all the taxa, so providing for the first time, an up-to-date, illustrated account of aloe occurrence in this part of the subcontinent.

Abstract

This e-book reviews environmental impacts of ski tourism in mountain environments. Specifically, the book addresses skiing impacts on soils, vegetation, vertebrate and invertebrate animals living in such habitats. Additional chapters also explain the methods for the restoration of disturbed sites at high altitude and snow cover in a changing climate. The e-book is therefore a compilation on the latest knowledge on environmental impacts of skiing and is intended to be a standard reference for ecologists, students and universities, business professionals (ski-resort managers), regional governmental organizations, conservation agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Abstract

"In the Pacific, as elsewhere, Indigenous communities live with the consequences of environmental mismanagement and over-exploitation but rarely benefit from the short-term economic profits such actions may generate within the global system. National and international policy frameworks ultimately rely on local community assent. Without effective local participation and partnership, these extremely imposed frameworks miss out on millennia of local observation and understanding and seldom deliver viable and sustained environmental, cultural and economic benefits at the local level. This collection argues that environmental sustainability, indigenous political empowerment and economic viability will succeed only by taking account of distinct local contexts and cultures. In this regard, these Pacific Indigenous case studies offer 'islands of hope' for all communities marginalised by increasingly intrusive--and increasingly rapid--technological changes and by global dietary, economic, political and military forces with whom they have no direct contact or influence." - taken from publisher website.

Abstract

The Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence, founded in 1775 by the Grand Duke Peter Leopold, is the oldest scientific museum in Europe. Firenze University Press opens the series dealing with the six sections of the Museum with this book on La Specola, situated in Palazzo Torrigiani, which represented the original nucleus. The articles in the first section reconstruct the historic background, the foundation of La Specola and the genesis and development of the collections. The second part considers the anatomical waxes, the entomological collections, and those of the vertebrates and the invertebrates, with a view to providing a description of the precious specimens that is at once precise and accessible. Finally, the third section completes the picture, retracing the important research activity that has accompanied the history of La Specola and reporting on the scientific projects in which the personnel are engaged. The largest collection in the world of anatomical wax models and the vast zoological collection are illustrated by the people directly involved in the related research, and by a superb selection of original photos produced specially for this publication.
