Transnational civil society networks have become increasingly important democratizing actors in global politics. Still, the exploration of democracy in such networks remains conceptually and methodologically challenging. Practice theory provides a framework to study democracy as routinized performances even in contexts of fluid boundaries, temporal relations and a diffuse constituency. The author attempts to understand how new forms of democratic practice emerge in the interaction between political actors and their structural environments.

Research Methods in Deliberative Democracy is the first book that brings together a wide range of methods used in the study of deliberative democracy. It offers thirty-one different methods that scholars use for theorizing, measuring, exploring, or applying deliberative democracy. Each chapter presents one method by explaining its utility in deliberative democracy research and providing guidance on its application by drawing on examples from previous studies. The book hopes to inspire scholars to undertake methodologically robust, intellectually creative, and politically relevant research. It fills a significant gap in a rapidly growing field of research by assembling diverse methods and thereby expanding the range of methodological choices available to students, scholars, and practitioners of deliberative democracy.

Democratic societies are being challenged to look for new ways of doing politics that involve different stakeholders, particularly citizens. This book looks at public authorities' attempts to put society at the core of public policies in the form of collaborative governance. It provides a full account of a major case from the provincial council of Gipuzkoa (Basque Country, Spain): 150 projects, more than 900 organisations, and 50.000 participants and beneficiaries. ?Pracademic? lessons learned derive from the interaction among 50 practitioners engaged in the day-to-day practice of the case and scholars from different countries. Topics included relate to major challenges that collaborative governance reforms are facing across the world: structures, institutionalisation, relationships, leadership, accountability, innovation, experimentation, communication, intangible resources, trust, and assessment of outcomes (particularly in terms of Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs). La négociation semble bien être devenue le modèle dominant de régulation des rapports sociaux. Le phénomène juridique n'est pas épargné : pas une de ses branches qui ne témoigne de l'irrésistible ascension du droit négocié. On négocie la loi, tant en amont qu'en aval de son adoption : on négocie le règlement des conflits tant au tribunal qu'en dehors des prétoires. S'il convient donc de prendre l'exacte mesure du phénomène et des transformations qu'il imprime dans l'ordre juridique tout entier, faut-il pour autant céder au mythe du « tout conventionnel » ? Adoptant une méthode critique et interdisciplinaire, le présent ouvrage multiplie les raisons de résister à cette dérive. Au plan sociologique, il souligne la permanence des rapports de force derrière les figures de l'accord et du compromis ; au plan éthique, il rappelle l'impossibilité de nouer le lien social à partir d'un point de vue exclusivement solipsiste ; au plan juridique, il montre combien règle et accord se déterminent réciproquement. De sorte qu'en définitive, c'est un nouvel objet de recherche qui s'est fait valoir – et qui donne son titre à l'ouvrage : l'entrelacement dialectique du droit négocié et du droit imposé. Par ailleurs, la négociation elle-même apparaît dédoublée, oscillant sans cesse entre un pôle idéal (la « délibération ») marqué par la bonne foi et la rationalité procédurale, et un pôle cynique (le « marchandage ») caractérisé par la défiance et le calcul d'intérêt. C'est au carrefour de cette double dialectique de l'autonomie et de l'hétéronomie, de la délibération et du marchandage que ce livre place le droit négocié, éclairé ici par la théorie du droit, les sciences sociales et la doctrine juridique.

Over the last two decades, the literature on political participation has flourished, reflecting the increasing use of diverse modes of citizen involvement. These include established modes of participation, such as voting, protests, mass demonstrations, and petition signing, but also newer modes specific to the online environment (ICT-related), participation in referendums, public consultations, or engagement in political deliberation. The importance and intensity of these modes is reflected both in the number of people getting involved and in the increasing number of policies that are subject to various modes of participation on a regular basis. There is extensive literature about how these modes of participation function, why people get involved, and the consequences of their participation. However, limited attention is paid to the relationship between political participation and the pursuit of sustainability at a local, regional, or central level. Existing studies indicate that citizen engagement can be a cost-effective method to characterize changes of local environments; however, not much is known beyond this process. This Special Issue aims to address this void in the literature and brings together contributions that analyze how participation can be associated with sustainability and local development in various settings. It explores the relationship between political participation and the management of their local environment. This Special Issue enhances the existing knowledge and understanding about how modes of participation can be reflected in stronger sustainability. The Special Issue provides the space for an academic debate that addresses issues such as climate change, resource allocation, or the pursuit of sustainability programs and policies. The contributions include a mix of single-case studies and comparative analyses across European countries.
