Abstract

This book presents selected processes that can be applied in contemporary and future biorefinery systems. It discusses the indicators characterizing the level of sustainable development for these systems as well as the methods of segregation and purification of biorefinery products, the use of enzymes, the possibility of obtaining bioplastics, ethyl alcohol, and co-pyrolysis of coal and biomass. This book is a valuable resource for research teams working on the development of biorefinery technologies as well as teachers and students of biotechnology faculties.

Abstract

Undoubtedly, drinking water of an acceptable quality has become a scarce commodity. Water shortage is becoming a major concern all around the world due to limited freshwater resources as well as the high cost of freshwater transportation from freshwater-rich areas to arid areas. As a result, solutions such as water recycling and desalination of saline or brackish water are being introduced and emerging worldwide as alternative ways of supplying water. Desalination of seawater is known to be one of mankind's earliest forms of water treatment, and it has become one of the most sustainable alternative solutions to provide freshwater for many communities and industrial sectors. This book aims to cover the challenges and opportunities in desalination processes.

Abstract

Due to industrialization and increasing population, water demand continues to grow at compound annual growth rates of 7-8%. The current demand is also intensified by increased water utilization for hand washing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, around 20,000 desalination plants operating around the world produce 100 million cubic meters of water per day to supply 300 million people. These desalination plants are a major source of environmental and marine pollution due to their inefficient operation. Scientists and researchers are encouraged to develop out-of-box solutions to achieve future sustainability. This book addresses key challenges related to the desalination industry.

Abstract

This book reviews recent trends, developments, and technologies of energy storage devices and their applications. It describes the electrical equivalent circuit model of batteries, the technology of battery energy storage systems in rooftop solar-photovoltaic (PV) systems, and the implementation of second-life batteries in hybrid electric vehicles. It also considers a novel energy management control strategy for PV batteries operating in DC microgrids, along with the present state and opportunities of solid-state batteries. In addition, the book examines the technology of thin-film energy storage devices based on physical vapor deposition as well as the challenges of ionic polymer-metal composite membranes. Furthermore, due to the novel battery technology in energy storage devices, this book covers the structural, optical, and related electrical studies of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) bearing in mind the applications of gel polymer electrolytes in solid-state batteries. Since energy storage plays a vital role in renewable energy systems, another salient part of this book is the research on phase change materials for maximum solar energy utilization and improvement. This volume is a useful reference for readers who wish to familiarize themselves with the newest advancements in energy storage systems.

Abstract

The Handbook of Leaving Religion introduces a neglected field of research with the aim to outline previous and contemporary research, and suggest how the topic of leaving religion should be studied in the future. The handbook consists of three sections: 1) Major debates about leaving religion; 2) Case studies and empirical insights; and 3) Theoretical and methodological approaches. Section one provides the reader with an introduction to key terms, historical developments, major controversies and significant cases. Section two includes case studies that illustrate various processes of leaving religion from different perspectives, and each chapter provides new empirical insights. Section three discusses, presents and encourages new approaches to the study of leaving religion.

Abstract
