Abstract

Each one of us in his life has, at least once, smelled the scent of roses, read one canto of Dante's Commedia or listened to the sound of the sea from a shell. All of this is possible thanks to the astonishing capabilities of an organ, such as the brain, that allows us to collect and organize perceptions coming from sensory organs and to produce behavioural responses accordingly. Studying an operating brain in a non-invasive way is extremely difficult in mammals, and particularly in humans. In the last decade, a small teleost fish, zebrafish (Danio rerio), has been making its way into the field of neurosciences. The brain of a larval zebrafish is made up of 'only' 100000 neurons and it's completely transparent, making it possible to optically access it. Here, taking advantage of the best of currently available technology, we devised optical solutions to investigate the dynamics of neuronal activity throughout the entire brain of zebrafish larvae.

Abstract

This Guide to General Histology and Microscopic Anatomy is intended to provide the effective support particularly for students of Medicine or Life sciences enrolled to the courses provided by the Department of Histology and Embryology at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University. The Guide includes original, high-quality microphotographs and electronograms, annotated with contemporary terminology on histology and microscopic anatomy of tissues and organs. The Guide, however, does not aim to substitute a histology textbook or microscopy anatomy atlas and avoids detailed textual explanations that can be found elsewhere. The Guide rather contributes to better understanding, follow-up and self-orientation in practical lessons, lectures and seminars of the Department. The authors believe that this Guide will help to unravel fine patterns of human microscopic structures within their amazing complexity and diversity.

Abstract

Mankind has reached its present physical form through evolution of the movement system. Muscles, bones, and joints are the most important components of the movement system. Muscles are active elements, while bones and joints are passive elements. But to bring about movement, these three elements must work together. Tendons are round, oval, or flat tissues that connect muscles to bones. Muscle, tendon, or ligament injuries prevent motion so this is an important issue in trauma. If muscle, tendon, or ligament injuries occur together with vessel or nerve injury, it may be life threatening. The cause of injury might differ from a simple sports injury to a serious traffic accident. Muscles, bones, and joints have taken their place in the literature, but it would be wrong to say the same for tendons. This book describes tendons from different perspectives, thus providing the missing information in the literature. I hope that this book will be useful for anyone who wants to read about new perspectives on tendons. I also hope that it will inspire researchers working in this field.

Abstract

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies worldwide, and the pathogenesis of this neoplasm is probably one of the most studied. The knowledge obtained over time has led to the development of screening and early diagnosis systems, allowing a significant reduction in the incidence of this neoplasm. However, what is currently known probably represents only the tip of the iceberg of the biology of this tumor. It was recently shown that the gut microbiota may contribute to colorectal cancerogenesis. In addition, several novel targeted therapies are now applied to patients with colorectal carcinoma. Nonetheless, several questions are still unanswered. Could the modulation of the gut microbiota modify the risk of tumor progression or the efficacy of therapies? Are there any predictive biomarkers of the risk of tumor progression or the efficacy of target therapies? Is metastatic colorectal cancer one or more diseases? This book collects a series of scientific articles reflecting part of the state of the art regarding colorectal cancer, seeking to answer these questions.

Abstract

From surgery to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, attempts to conquer colorectal cancer have been ongoing for a century. Due to these efforts, the mortality rate of colorectal cancer has decreased by about 3% per year for the past 10 years. Progress in reducing mortality from colorectal cancer can be accelerated by improving screening and the use of standard care in all populations. In recent years, advanced knowledge and technologies for better efficiency in targeting colorectal cancer have been developed to improve conventional therapeutics or to propose new therapies as standard regimens. This book discusses diagnostics as well as surgical techniques using robotics, immunotherapy, and radiology-based therapy for colorectal cancer. The section on diagnostics provides information on proteomics, organoid culture techniques, and various candidate markers. The section on treatment discusses robotic surgical techniques for rectal cancer care and multidisciplinary approaches for colorectal cancer treatment. The book also examines the latest in supportive care from a nutritional and metabolic point of view.

Abstract

Patients often need to have limbs amputated to save them from advanced malignant neoplasms and severe limb infections, or due to the failure to repair severe limb trauma. However, efforts should be made to maintain limbs where possible, and to minimize loss of function if amputation is required. We provide the latest developments in limb amputation for this purpose. This book provides expert commentary on the following issues: cutting to prevent large-scale amputations in peripheral arterial disease and diabetes, optimal wound treatment in severe trauma, troubles of prostheses due to stump overgrowth in amputation in children. We hope this book will help physicians dealing with limb illness and trauma, and all amputee patients.

Abstract

""Anatomia clavus et clavis medicinae est."" Anatomy is a fundamental science that studies the structure of the human body from ancient times. Over time, the discipline constantly expands with recent progress that has been produced in researching the human body. So, new methods of researching were incorporated in the anatomy development: plastic materials injections, plastination, computed techniques of sectional bodies, and embryology. Anatomic sections like macroscopic, mesoscopic, microscopic, and public anatomies; radiologic anatomy; computed anatomy; radiologic anatomies; and clinical anatomy contribute to realize a very complex discipline that represents the base of learning medicine.

Abstract

Histology is the science of tissues and as such histology studies cells and tissues of organs using a variety of techniques. Histological techniques are used in different disciplines: research, teaching, and clinical applications. This book explores the research currently being carried out at the molecular, subcellular, and cellular levels, both in normal and pathological processes, from genetic mechanisms to intra- and intercellular signaling. This book includes cutting-edge research reviews and descriptions of technological advances to modify bodily cells and tissues. Targeted at students and researchers in biological, medical, and related disciplines, this book will provide an overview of the work being done in this field, and will highlight gaps and areas that would benefit from further exploration. The book contains eight chapters in four sections and presents reviews in different areas of histology written by experts in their respective fields. Basic histology, cell biology, histopathology, and histological techniques are featured prominently as a recurring theme throughout the chapters. This book will be a most valuable resource for histologists, cell biologists, pathologists, and other scientists alike and contribute to the training of current and future biomedical scientists.
