Synthesizing almost thirty years of Dutch archaeological research in central and southern Italy, this book discusses and compares settlement and land use patterns from the late protohistoric period to the late Roman Republic. Considering both social and environmental factors, the authors analyze the long-term progression of indigenous Bronze Age tribal pastoralist societies towards the complexity of urbanized Roman society. Drawing on a decade of collaboration between Dutch and Italian researchers, this exhaustive study will be of great interest to students and scholars of Mediterranean archaeology.

The volume examines the epigraphic cultures of Italian communes during the High Middle Ages and their relationship to earlier epigraphic cultures in antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. It focuses especially on the question of continuity and breaks and the influence of the ancient epigraphic heritage on Medieval epigraphic practice in the cities.

Demonstrating feelings of grief was of great importance in the elite culture of liberal Italy. At the same time, mourning the dead flew in the face of societal trends toward secularization. The study analyzes the background of this ambivalent situation of conflict, examines the role of religion and nation in relation to death, discusses the relationship between body and emotions, and shows how grief was expressed across space.

This book is freely available in digital formats thanks to a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Anglophobia in Fascist Italy traces the origins and development of anti-British sentiment in Fascist Italy, as Britain turned from being an ally in the First World War to an enemy in the Second. The book demonstrates that Fascist ideologues framed Britain as a stagnant and decaying country and the polar opposite of Fascism's new civilization, to the point that the regime's assessment of British political resolve and military might were distorted by ideological bias. The book offers a thorough analysis of diplomatic, military and journalistic sources and demonstrates that anti-British tropes had permeated Italy to a greater degree than was previously believed.
