This book is an introduction to the language of systems biology, which is spoken among many disciplines, from biology to engineering. Authors Thomas Sauter and Marco Albrecht draw on a multidisciplinary background and evidence-based learning to facilitate the understanding of biochemical networks, metabolic modeling and system dynamics. Their pedagogic approach briefly highlights core ideas of concepts in a broader interdisciplinary framework to guide a more effective deep dive thereafter. The learning journey starts with the purity of mathematical concepts, reveals its power to connect biological entities in structure and time, and finally introduces physics concepts to tightly align abstraction with reality. This workbook is all about self-paced learning, supports the flipped-classroom concept, and kick-starts with scientific evidence on studying. Each chapter comes with links to external YouTube videos, learning checklists, and Integrated real-world examples to gain confidence in thinking across scientific perspectives. The result is an integrated approach that opens a line of communication between theory and application, enabling readers to actively learn as they read. This overview of capturing and analyzing the behavior of biological systems will interest adherers of systems biology and network analysis, as well as related fields such as bioinformatics, biology, cybernetics, and data science.

The delicate balance of resource intensity and efficiency of a solution for a very complex problem raises the issue of how these aspects constitute a symmetrical or asymmetrical system. Computational Intelligence (CI) offers a plethora of efficient tools for the potential and rather good quality solution of highly complex, often mathematically intractable problems. This "toolbox" is one of the best examples for the study of the above mentioned issue, namely, how to find the best balance, how to establish a symmetry of weights or costs in a particular field, for a particular problem. This special issue presents a number of interesting novel applications of CI for the tackling of a wide variety of difficult problems. The Introduction gives a short insight into the symmetry and asymmetry aspect of the topic.

The Discrete Event Simulation (DES) method has received widespread attention and acceptance by both researchers and practitioners in recent years. The range of application of DES spans across many different disciplines and research fields. In research, further development and advancements of the basic DES algorithm continue to be sought while various hybrid methods derived by combining DES with other simulation techniques continue to be developed. This book presents state-of-the-art contributions on fundamental development of the DES method, novel integration of the method with other modeling techniques as well as applications towards simulating and analyzing the performances of various types of systems. This book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students, researchers as well as professionals who are actively engaged in DES related work.

The oscillating disc cutting process has shown excellent results in precisely removing area-limited-concrete structures. Due to the highly dynamic oscillatory motion, the stiffness requirements to the tool structure and the basic machine have to be considered, which is the main purpose of this work. Based on these results, a concept of a mechanical adaption of the oscillating disc cutting process to an excavator attachment tool will be developed and tested on a prototype.

This open access book constitutes the proceedings of the 29th International Conference on Tools and Algorithms for the Construction and Analysis of Systems, TACAS 2023, which was held as part of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software, ETAPS 2023, during April 22-27, 2023, in Paris, France. The 56 full papers and 6 short tool demonstration papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 169 submissions. The proceedings also contain 1 invited talk in full paper length, 13 tool papers of the affiliated competition SV-Comp and 1 paper consisting of the competition report. TACAS is a forum for researchers, developers, and users interested in rigorously based tools and algorithms for the construction and analysis of systems. The conference aims to bridge the gaps between different communities with this common interest and to support them in their quest to improve the utility, reliability, flexibility, and efficiency of tools and algorithms for building computer-controlled systems.

When talking about modelling it is natural to talk about simulation. Simulation is the imitation of the operation of a real-world process or systems over time. The objective is to generate a history of the model and the observation of that history helps us understand how the real-world system works, not necessarily involving the real-world into this process. A system (or process) model takes the form of a set of assumptions concerning its operation. In a model mathematical and logical assumptions are considered, and entities and their relationship are delimited. The objective of a model – and its respective simulation – is to answer a vast number of “what-if” questions. Some questions answered in this book are: What if the power distribution system does not work as expected? What if the produced ships were not able to transport all the demanded containers through the Yangtze River in China? And, what if an installed wind farm does not produce the expected amount of energyt? Answering these questions without a dynamic simulation model could be extremely expensive or even impossible in some cases and this book aims to present possible solutions to these problems.

The goal of this book is to report original researches on algorithms and applications of Tabu Search to real-world problems as well as recent improvements and extensions on its concepts and algorithms. The book’ Chapters identify useful new implementations and ways to integrate and apply the principles of Tabu Search, to hybrid it with others optimization methods, to prove new theoretical results, and to describe the successful application of optimization methods to real world problems. Chapters were selected after a careful review process by reviewers, based on the originality, relevance and their contribution to local search techniques and more precisely to Tabu Search.
