This volume focuses on the new and diversifying interactions between civil society and the state in contemporary East Asia by including cases of entanglement and contention in the three fully consolidated democracies in the area: Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. The book argues that all three countries have reached a new era of post high-growth and mature democracy, leading to new social anxieties and increasing normative diversity, which have direct repercussions on the relationship between the state and civil society. It introduces a comparative perspective in identifying and discussing similarities and differences in East Asia based on in-depth case studies in the fields of environmental issues, national identities as well as neoliberalism and social inclusion that go beyond the classic dichotomy of state vs "liberal" civil society.

The German reunification of 1989/90 is an example of fundamental geopolitical changes in connection with a change in the entire legal framework. In addition, the major criminal law reform from 1975, the law of obligations reform of 2002 and the fundamental reorganization of the law with regard to insolvent debtors are well-known examples of a domestic reform will of a fundamentally legal nature. The Korean interest in the German experience of the last 25 years is all the more important Purely based on legal history, but also to be seen in the potential case of Korean reunification. The present volume includes the contributions of the fourth symposium of the law faculty of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen with the Yonsei Law School (Seoul), which was held in February 2015 in Göttingen. Volume 18 of the series “Göttingen Legal Writings” The series is published by the Law Faculty of the Georg-August University and makes events at the Faculty accessible to an interested public.

A free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. Peruvian migrant workers began arriving in South Korea in large numbers in the mid 1990s, eventually becoming one of the largest groups of non-Asians in the country. Migrant Conversions shows how despite facing unstable income and legal exclusion, migrants come to see Korea as an ideal destination. Some even see it as part of their divine destiny. Faced with looming departures, Peruvians develop cosmopolitan plans to transform themselves from economic migrants into pastors, lovers, and leaders. Set against the backdrop of 2008's global financial crisis, Vogel explores the intersections of three types of conversions- money, religious beliefs and cosmopolitan plans-to argue that conversions are how migrants negotiate the meaning of their lives in a constantly changing transnational context. At the convergence of cosmopolitan projects spearheaded by the state, churches, and other migrants, Peruvians change the value and meaning of their migrations. Yet, in attempting to make themselves at home in the world and give their families more opportunities, they also create potential losses. As Peruvians help carve out social spaces, they create complex and uneven connections between Peru and Korea that challenge a global hierarchy of nations and migrants. Exploring how migrants, churches and nations change through processes of conversion reveals how globalization continues to impact people's lives and ideas about their futures and pasts long after they have stopped moving, or that particular global moment has come to an end.

"On the Margins of Urban South Korea, seeks to provide rich and illuminating accounts of key sites of urban, national, and transnational development in contemporary South Korea. It is an outcome of long-term collaboration and dialogue among interdisciplinary Korean Studies scholars from architecture, anthropology, and geography. The seven key sites are the Education City Project in Jeju; the Chinatown Project in Incheon; Saemaul Undong(New Village Movement)in Pohang; Alternative Korean Wave in Bongcheon-dong, Seoul; Pine Tree Hill Neighbourhood Activism in a southern port city; sites of struggles against greenbelt deregulation in the Seoul Metropolitan Region; and the garment worker movement in Changshin-Dong, Seoul. The volume offers an original focus on key sites or, what the editors and contributors call core locations, and aims to articulate the significance of knowledge based in a particular location. It is inspired by two inter-connected notions: "core location (haeksim hyunjang)," a place with the lived experience of multiple layers of marginality in colonial history with an emphasis on the reseacher's praxis and rootedness in the location; and "Asia is Method," a means of thinking about an area, especially the non-western, not simply as an object of western interest but as a tool to generate frameworks that enable decolonization of epistemological hegemony. This volume aims to further develop the relevance of core location and Asia as Method in social science, targeting both an Anglophone readership and an audience in East Asia."--

This Special Issue (SI) deals with different end-users’ perspectives on newly developed energy policy and technology. Although the importance of end-users’ preferences is not totally new to the energy sector, this issue needs to be urgently and consistently addressed if new policies, projects, and technologies are to be introduced successfully. The eight papers included in this SI are focused on various issues such as modeling the future energy demand, household energy consumption behavior, public perceptions of new energy technologies and projects, and ICT–energy efficiency interrelationship. Some papers also analyze end-users’ experiences with recently introduced energy technologies. Based on these eight articles with various topics, this SI will provide fruitful insights in assessing and forecasting the evolution of the future energy sector. I hope this SI can contribute to the increase in communication and cooperation among academic researchers as well as practitioners in energy fields.

The colonial experience of the early twentieth century shaped Korea's culture and identity, leaving a troubling past that was subtly reconstructed in South Korean postcolonial cinema. Relating postcolonial discourses to a reading of Manchurian action films, kisaeng and gangster films, and revenge horror films, Parameters of Disavowal shows how filmmakers reworked, recontextualized, and erased ideas and symbols of colonial power. In particular, Jinsoo An examines how South Korean films privileged certain sites, such as the kisaeng house and the Manchurian frontier, generating unique meanings that challenged the domination of the colonial power, and how horror films indirectly explored both the continuing trauma of colonial violence and lingering emotional ties to the colonial order. Espousing the ideology of nationalism while responding to a new Cold War order that positioned Japan and South Korea as political and economic allies, postcolonial cinema formulated distinctive ways of seeing and imagining the colonial past.
