"Vision traditionally occupies the height of the sensorial hierarchy. The sense of clarity and purity conveyed by vision, allows it to be explicitly associated with truth and knowledge. The law has always relied on vision and representation, from eye-witnesses to photography, to imagery and emblems. The law and its normative gaze can be understood as that which decrees what is permitted to be and become visible and what is not. Indeed, even if law's perspectival view is bound to be betrayed by the realities of perception, it is nonetheless productive of real effects on the world. This first title in the interdisciplinary series 'Law and the Senses' asks how we can develop new theoretical approaches to law and seeing that go beyond a simple critique of the legal pretension to truth. This volume aims to understand how law might see and unsee, and how in its turn is seen and unseen. It explores devices and practices of visibility, the evolution of iconology and iconography, and the relation between the gaze of the law and the blindness of justice. The contributions, all radically interdisciplinary, are drawn from photography, legal theory, philosophy, and poetry."

The sensory nervous system is of critical importance in our daily lives and contributes to our personal well-being and safety as well as communication with others. However, it is only when disease or injury impair its function that we fully appreciate the relevance of our sensory modalities. Dès l’origine, une des ambitions fondamentales et fondatrices de la sémiotique a été d’appréhender et de décrire l’unicité du sens à travers la diversité des langages, en postulant que, loin d’être cantonné en un lieu, le sens circule « transversalement », pour ainsi dire, et sans privilège d’un de ses modes d’expression. Les articles de ce volume soumettent les « sémioses » à de nouvelles interrogations où elles sont autant de « chemins de traverse » entre l’expérience sensible, les langages et les pratiques effectives du sens en situation. La première partie de l’ouvrage suit trois directions de la transversalité : foyer de formation (dans la sémiotisation de l’esthésie à travers le concept d’instance), modélisation (dans les formes d’intégration ou de parcours), extension de la saisie (approche transversale du sens vécu comme interaction). La deuxième partie vise le foyer sensible du sens dans sa relation avec la pratique esthétique. La troisième partie s’attache au concept d’instance, avec ses trois positions : « expression », « horizon » et « effectuation ». La quatrième partie étudie la transversalité à hauteur des situations elles-mêmes en étendant le champ de pertinence de la sémiotique à la réalité socio-sémiotique des significations. Au passage, les auteurs revisitent, voire redéfinissent des notions et concepts aussi apparemment simples et aussi sémiotiquement subtils que « parcours », « intégration », « ajustement », « cohésion », « catégorie », « instance », « instanciation », « esthésie », « immanence », et, au premier chef, « transversalité ».
