"Schauplätze und Themen der Umweltgeschichte" ist die Frucht einer Seminarveranstaltung und der vierte Werkstattbericht, in dem zunächst ausschließlich Orte exemplarischer umwelthistorischer Bedeutung vorgestellt und einem Leserkreis als lohnende Ausflugs- oder Reiseziele empfohlen wurden. Im Laufe der Jahre stellte sich heraus, dass manche selbstbegründeten umwelthistorische Themen nicht oder nur sehr bemüht "verortet" werden können, bei anderen Themen ist der heutige Ort kaum mehr physisch, sondern nur noch ideengeschichtlich mit dem umwelthistorischen Thema verbunden ist. Deshalb wurde bereits mit der dritten Ausgabe das "Ortsprinzip" zum Teil aufgehoben und thematische Essays und Aufsätze aus der Seminarproduktion sind mit aufgenommen worden. Der Band setzt die Berichterstattung über Arbeitserträge aus der gleichnamigen Seminarveranstaltung des Graduiertenkollegs "Interdisziplinäre Umweltgeschichte" fort. Die Beiträge möchten auch Fernerstehenden ein stärkeres Bewußtsein für zeit- und ortsübergreifende Umweltthemen vermitteln und zielen damit zugleich auch auf die Stärkung der ökologischen Grundbildung. Sie können unseres Erachtens auch Vorlagen oder Arbeitsmittel für ähnliche Seminarveranstaltungen sein.

This study treats ecotourism in National Protected Areas of Lao PDR as a “recreational frontier” which instrumentalizes the recreation of human natures in capitalism’s centers for that of nonhuman natures at capitalism’s (closing) frontiers. This world-ecological practice of ecorational instrumentality – i.e. of nature domination in the name of “Nature” – presents a remedy for capitalism’s crisis that is itself crisis-ridden, enacting a central tension of ecocapitalism: that between “conservation” and “development”. This epistemic-institutional tension is traced through the preconditions, modes and effects of ecotourism in Laos by gradually zooming from the most general scale of societal nature relations into the most detailed intricacies of ecotouristic practice. The combination of Bourdieu, Marx and Critical Theory enables a systematic analysis of the recreational frontier as enactment of various contradictions deriving from the “false-and-real” Nature/Society dualism.

Warum sollen Menschen die Natur schützen? Soll die Natur in einem bestimmten Zustand erhalten werden oder ist ihrer Entwicklung freier Lauf zu lassen? Bedarf es heute einer neuen Ethik, um die Natur in den Mittelpunkt menschlicher Schutzbemühungen zu rücken oder reichen herkömmliche Begründungen aus? Wie hängen moralische Argumente für den Naturschutz und konkrete Schutzstrategien zusammen? Die bislang vorliegende philosophische Literatur ist wenig hilfreich für die Praxis: wegen ihrer großen Abstraktheit fehlen konkrete Bezüge weitgehend. Der Band richtet sich an alle im Naturschutz Tätigen: sei es in Behörden, in Verbänden, in der Umweltpolitik oder in Naturschutzzentren. Er eignet sich vor allem aber auch hervorragend für Lehrerinnen und Lehrer der Biologie und Ethik.

Perspectives on Nature Conservation demonstrates the diversity of information and viewpoints that are critical for appreciating the gaps and weaknesses in local, regional and hemispheric ecologies, and also for understanding the limitations and barriers to accomplishing critical nature conservation projects.
