At the crossroads of major trade routes and characterised by intense human circulations, the area that encompasses northern Nigeria and southern Niger is a privileged space to study transnational religious dynamics. Islam is, indeed, an essential feature of this region assuming today new forms in terms of discourses, practices, and modes of dissemination. In order to capture their changing complexity and diversity, regional Islamic dynamics need to be observed from both sides of the Niger-Nigeria border, where religious patterns echo each other but also obey different socio-political injunctions. While studying the processes of religious renewal and mutation, it is necessary to pay attention to the varied forms these processes take, to their direct and indirect effects and to the channels of transmission used. An interdisciplinary team of seven researchers from Niger, Nigeria, France and the United Kingdom was set up to conduct this transnational study; all authors carried out ethnographic fieldwork in both countries while constantly exchanging, comparing and discussing their respective findings with each other. Thus, this book provides first-hand material collected in the field, that contributes to enrich the reflexion on contemporary transformation dynamics in the Islamic landscapes of Niger and Nigeria, but also reflects the relevance of a transnational and comparative approach of these phenomena. Finally, it showcases the collaborative work of African and European scholars from Francophone and Anglophone countries - a type of scientific partnership unprecedented in this field.

Across parts of Africa, states have been restricting the operations, funding and speech of NGOs. Many have therefore expressed their concern that the cornerstones of a free civil society—the rights to free association and free speech—are under attack. However, another concern that warrants greater attention is whether such restrictive measures might also threaten the social rights of NGOs’ beneficiaries. The ICESCR obliges states to take steps progressively towards the full realisation of social rights. How, then, should a state’s social rights obligations be understood when NGOs enter the picture? How might those obligations affect a state’s freedom to regulate NGOs? This book offers a systematic examination of the ways in which the social rights obligations of states towards beneficiaries can reorganise and refine our understanding of the regulatory relationship between states and NGOs. Einige afrikanische Staaten haben die Handlungsbefugnisse, Finanzierung und die Meinungsäußerung von NGOs eingeschränkt. Viele haben ihre Besorgnis darüber geäußert, dass die Eckpfeiler einer freien Zivilgesellschaft - das Recht auf Versammlungs- und Redefreiheit - angegriffen werden. Ein bislang eher weniger untersuchtes Problem ist jedoch, ob solche restriktiven Maßnahmen auch die sozialen Rechte der Begünstigten von NGOs gefährden könnten. Der UN-Sozialpakt verpflichtet die Staaten, Schritt für Schritt auf eine vollständige Verwirklichung der sozialen Rechte zuzugehen. Wie sollten also die Verpflichtungen eines Staates in Bezug auf soziale Rechte verstanden werden, wenn NGOs ins Spiel kommen? Wie könnten sich diese Verpflichtungen auf die Freiheit eines Staates auswirken, NGOs zu regulieren? Dieses Buch bietet eine systematische Untersuchung wie die sozialrechtlichen Verpflichtungen von Staaten gegenüber den Begünstigten unser Verständnis der Regulierungsbeziehungen zwischen Staaten und NGOs neu definieren und weiterentwickeln können.

Zusammenfassung Die Autorin untersucht, wie lokale Akteure, die von großflächigen Landinvestitionen betroffen sind, ihre Interessen mit rechtlichen Normen schützen. Erfolgsbedingungenwerden durch rechtliche, soziale Mobilisierungs- und Business Management Perspektiven identifiziert und in vier Fallstudien aus Sierra Leone und den Philippinen spezifiziert. Die Befunde zeigen die Relevanz der nationalen rechtlichen Opportunitätsstrukturen, der Stärke von Unterstützungsnetzwerken sowie der Charakteristika von Unternehmen. Auch die Rolle von politischen Eliten und die Einigkeit lokaler Akteure ist zentral. Das Buch ist für Leser und Leserinnen aus Wissenschaft und Praxis relevant, die sich für die Interaktion von rechtlichen Möglichkeiten und lokalen Reaktionen bei großen Investitionsprojekten interessieren. Mit Fallbeispielen aus dem Globalen Süden leistet die Arbeit einen Beitrag zur Literatur zu rechtlicher Mobilisierung. Abstract This book enquires how local communities affected by large-scale land deals make use of legal norms to protect their interests. It combines legal, social mobilisation and business management approaches to identify conditions that promise success in this respect, which are explored in four case studies from two countries: Sierra Leone and the Philippines. The findings of these studies show the relevance of the national legal opportunity structure, strong support networks and the specific characteristics of a company in this regard. The role of political elites and the unity of local actors are also discussed. This book is especially relevant for academics and practitioners interested in the relationship between legal frameworks and local reactions to foreign investors. It also contributes to the research literature on legal mobilisation by going beyond the Western world. Finally, the book offers perspectives on the ‘middle ground’ of social mobilisation phenomenons, which are neither social movements nor everyday resistance.

This Special Issue of Sustainability on “Partnerships for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” brings together a collection of articles that explore a diverse range of issues and challenges faced by partnership arrangements that seek to support the achievement of the SDGs and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As well as encompassing a diverse range of collaborative forms and themes, and involving a variety of stakeholders, these collaborative initiatives are all notably shaped by the dynamics of the particular contexts in which they operate. These contexts include individual, organizational, sectoral, spatial, and geographical settings. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on partnering for the SDGs is also apparent. The interplay between these elements offers a useful global–local context for further inquiry and reflection on how deeper and more meaningful collaborative relationships might be developed to achieve the SDG targets and beyond.

Der Austausch zwischen Wissenschaft und Praxis wird aktuell häufig thematisiert: Wie lässt sich Transfer konzeptualisieren und systematisieren? Wie kann ein solcher Transfer konkret aussehen? Was sind Beispiele für Transfer in der Fluchtforschung und was wird aus Beispielfällen sowohl für die Wissenschaft als auch für die Praxis ersichtlich? In diesem Buch wird Transfer zunächst im Sinne einer Wissensmobilisierung konzeptualisiert: als Kommunikation, Beratung oder kooperatives Handeln und Forschen. Daran anschließend greift der Band die Fluchtforschung als Themenbereich heraus und die Autorinnen und Autoren diskutieren Transfer etwa aus Sicht der verschiedenen Bildungsbereiche, der Sozialen Arbeit und der öffentlichen Verwaltung. Fallbeispiele und Erläuterungen bieten einen Einstieg in das Thema und machen Transfer auch außerhalb der eigenen Fachperspektive verständlich. Interviews mit Akteur*innen aus der praktischen Arbeit ergänzen die Beiträge.
