Abstract

Standing on the broken ground of resource extraction settings, the state is sometimes like a chimera: its appearance and intentions are misleading and, for some actors, it is unknowable and incomprehensible. It may be easily mistaken for someone or something else, like a mining company, for example.

Abstract

The Arctic zone of the Earth is a major source of mineral and other natural resources for the future development of science and technology. It contains a large supply of strategic mineral deposits, including rare earths, copper, phosphorus, niobium, platinum-group elements, and other critical metals. The continued melting of the sea ice due to climate change makes these resources more accessible than ever before. However, the mineral exploration in the Arctic has always been a challenge due to the climatic restrictions, remote location, and vulnerability of Arctic ecosystems. This book covers a broad range of topics related to the problem of Arctic mineral resources, including geological, geochemical, and mineralogical aspects of their occurrence and formation; chemical technologies; and environmental and economic problems related to mineral exploration. The contributions can be tentatively classified into four major types: geodynamics and metallogeny, mineralogy and petrology, mineralogy and crystallography, and mining and chemical technologies associated with the exploration of mineral deposits and the use of raw materials for manufacturing new products. The book can be of interest for all those interested in Arctic issues and especially in Arctic mineral resources and associated problems of mineralogy, geology, geochemistry, and technology.

Abstract

Geochemistry is crucial in understanding and controlling environmental concerns. The effects of global warming are also being monitored through geochemical measurements in the atmosphere and oceans. Increasingly sensitive instrumentation enables continuous monitoring of pollution levels in the air, water, and on land, allowing high-quality data to support and enforce environmental regulations governing emissions. As a result, geochemistry has become an essential part of scientific and political discussion on many environmental challenges. Improving our knowledge of life on Earth may be the most essential job done by geochemists. This book includes a variety of data relevant to geochemistry and highlights research related to mineral wealth and mining and the development of strategies and scientific standards to significantly increase oil exploitation in the long term. It also provides information on the effects of geochemical components on humans and the environment, as well as environmental and geochemical exploration surveys through sediments.

Abstract

This work discusses the processes and dynamics of the landscapes of the mining industry, of the degraded areas, and of their possibilities for redevelopment through the creation of "new landscapes". The case of abandoned mining areas is seen in the context of the three phases of landscape transformation (previous, contemporary and subsequent to the mining activity), and in the context of the expanse of the regions affected by the phenomenon. The latter led to the hypothesis that the territory enhancement project should be placed within a complex system, whose main features are widespread interventions involving and intercepting both new and consolidated landscape networks.

Abstract

This work gathers a series of contributions presented at the 1st International Conference of Geosciences in the CPLP on 14th to 16th May 2012 in the Auditorium of the Rector’s Office of the University of Coimbra. It presents studies by various teams affiliated to different institutions from the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP), including technical approaches and innovative research, and the application of scientific knowledge to solving the most pressing problems of our times. These high-interest works document problems and solutions from around the Portuguese-speaking world, revealing the great importance of the concepts, geotechnologies, prospection, geology, engineering and mineral resources for the development, wellbeing and progress of humanity.
