This open access book presents technologies and methods of lightweight system design to support future low-emission aviation in achieving climate targets. It will be shown how reduction of weight and aerodynamic drag affects the energy consumption of commercial aircraft and what characterizes lightweight system design. Methods, design principles, production technologies and options for functional integration are available for more energy-efficient aircraft. Research results from the last decade are presented, which are intended to encourage the reader to further research and, above all, to implement them in future aircraft. The Author Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Wiedemann heads the DLR Institute of Lightweight Systems and helds a professorship for Adaptive Systems at the Technical University of Braunschweig. He combines his experience from 15 years in the aviation industry with his research expertise in the field of lightweight system design, a combination of lightweight composite structures and function integration. Martin Wiedemann is board member in the Cluster of Excellence "Sustainable and Energy Efficient Aviation - SE2A" at the Technical University of Braunschweig and board member in the German wind energy research association. He is co-leader of the DLR Alliance for Lightweight Production Technologies and member of the German CFRP Fuselage Forum, a DLR cooperation with Airbus.

This open access book discusses advances in semantic interoperability for materials modelling, aiming at integrating data obtained from different methods and sources into common frameworks, and facilitating the development of platforms where simulation services in computational molecular engineering can be provided as well as coupled and linked to each other in a standardized and reliable way. The Virtual Materials Marketplace (VIMMP), which is open to all service providers and clients, provides a framework for offering and accessing such services, assisting the uptake of novel modelling and simulation approaches by SMEs, consultants, and industrial R&D end users. Semantic assets presented include the EngMeta metadata schema for research data infrastructures in simulation-based engineering and the collection of ontologies from VIMMP, including the ontology for simulation, modelling, and optimization (OSMO) and the VIMMP software ontology (VISO).

Biomass is an increasingly important source of electricity, heat, and liquid fuel. One near-term option for using biomass to generate electricity is to cofire biomass in coal-fired electricity plants. This report focuses on two aspects of biomass use: plant-site modifications, changes in operations, and costs associated with cofiring biomass; and the logistical issues associated with delivering biomass to the plant.

In diesem Open-Access-Buch werden Möglichkeiten vorgestellt, die emissionsminimale Luftfahrt der Zukunft für die Erreichung der Klimaziele zu unterstützen. Das essentials zeigt, wie sich die Reduktion von Gewicht und Luftwiderstand auf den Energieverbrauch von Verkehrsflugzeugen auswirkt und was den Systemleichtbau vom klassischen Leichtbau unterscheidet. Es beschreibt, welche Methoden, Bauweisen, Fertigungstechnologien und welche Möglichkeiten der Funktionsintegration für energieeffizientere Flugzeuge zur Verfügung stehen. Martin Wiedemann leitet das DLR-Institut für Faserverbundleichtbau und Adaptronik und ist Professor für Adaptronik an der TU Braunschweig. Er verbindet seine Erfahrungen aus 15 Jahren in der Luftfahrtindustrie mit den Möglichkeiten der Forschung auf dem Gebiet des Systemleichtbaus, einer gemeinsamen Disziplin des Faserverbundleichtbaus und der Adaptronik. Martin Wiedemann ist zudem Vorstandsmitglied im Exzellenzcluster „Sustainable and Energy Efficient Aviation – SE2A” der Technischen Universität Braunschweig und im Forschungsverbund Windenergie von FhG-IWES, ForWind und DLR. Er ist Co-Leiter der DLR Allianz für Leichtbauproduktionstechnologien und Mitglied im Lenkungskreis CFK-Rumpf Deutschland, einer Kooperation des DLR mit Airbus und Premium Aerotec.

This open access book presents a collection of the most up-to-date research results in the field of steel development with a focus on pioneering alloy concepts that result in previously unattainable materials properties. Specifically, it gives a detailed overview of the marriage of high-performance steels of the highest strength and form-ability with damage-tolerant zirconia ceramics by innovative manufacturing technologies, thereby yielding a new class of high-performance composite materials. This book describes how new high-alloy stainless TRIP/TWIP steels (TRIP: TRansformation-Induced Plasticity, TWIP: TWinning-induced Plasticity) are combined with zirconium dioxide ceramics in powder metallurgical routes and via melt infiltration to form novel TRIP-matrix composites. This work also provides a timely perspective on new compact and damage-tolerant composite materials, filigree light-weight structures as well as gradient materials, and a close understanding of the mechanisms of the phase transformations.
