Leo Tolstoy's works are not only masterpieces of world literature, but also mirrors of their time, of the socio-cultural transformations which took place in Tsarist Russia; it is from this perspective that, in this work, this great writer's production is analysed. In particular, the author examines the evolution of the institution of marriage in the second half of the 19th century in Russia, starting from the reading of Family Happiness , Anna Karenina and The Kreutzer Sonata. If Family happiness preludes to the crisis of the arranged marriage, its implosion is beautifully described in Anna Karenina . Anna announces the definitive death of this institution when she defies the society of her time by not hiding her adultery and, on the contrary, by exhibiting it and trying to legitimize it.The Kreutzer Sonata, lastly, demonstrates the successful overcoming of the aristocratic marriage model, replaced by the bourgeois one.

This book was written with the primary purpose of filling in the information gap in the collection of academic knowledge about non-religious rituals, which are also known as civil ceremonies. This area forms that part of the ritual culture, the history of which is closely related to the four decades of the Communist regime in Slovakia. Through civil ceremonies following the life cycle, this regime sought to suppress the influence of the religious worldview and create a "socialist citizen". Three ceremonial opportunities: birth, marriage and death. represent the main line of the book's chapters. Since the publication offers an ethnological perspective, the attention focuses, apart from a retrospective analysis of the development of institutional ceremonies, on their reflection and acceptance by people. The knowledge basis of this book comes from ethnographic research conducted at various locations in Slovakia in several time segments - in the mid-1980s, at the beginning of the 1990s and subsequently in 2014-2016.

Tibet is known for its broad range of marriage practices, particularly polyandry, where two or more brothers share one wife. With economic development and massive Chinese social and political reforms, including new marriage laws prohibiting plural marriages, polyandry was expected to disappear from Tibetan social lives. This book describes the surprising increase in polyandry in Panam valley during the 1980s. It explores married lives in polyandrous houses and develops a theory of a flexible kinship of potentiality through the lens of a farming village in Tibet Autonomous Region. It is the first book-length ethnography to explore kinship and marriage in Tibet under Chinese rule.
