Abstract

This book compiles research on Enterobacterales characterization concerning the presence of genes associated with virulence (adhesins; surface cellulose structures and curli; siderophores, e.g., enterobactin, aerobactin, and yersiniabactin; protectines; invasins or toxins), and, furthermore, bacterial-biofilm-associated phenotypes. Although not directly involved in pathogenicity, the acquisition of multiple antibiotic resistances strongly supports the success of opportunistic Enterobacterales pathogens in invasion, survival, and spread and markedly complicates the treatment of infections. Not only pathogens, but also commensal bacteria, considered harmless and part of the normal microbiota, are exposed to selection pressure and can be a reservoir of mobile genetic elements carrying antibiotic resistance genes. Therefore, the occurrence of drug-resistant bacteria within a commensal population and the possibility to exchange genetic material through horizontal gene transfer may represent a major health concern.

Abstract

The cultivation and harvesting of sugar beets (roots and haulm) is one of the most labour and energy consuming work processes in the agricultural industry. The improvement of the qualitative indicators of the sugar beet harvesting process as the final operation in the work flow of its production represents a multi-faceted research-and-engineering problem, which is to be solved basing on the search for new implement design concepts and overall beet harvester design layouts, the thorough theoretical substantiation of their design and process parameters, the experimental verification of the completed theoretical research with the ultimate objective of the analysis and synthesis of their rational parameters. Theoretical research must play a fundamental role in the mechanical and technological substantiation of the root lifting process. It must be used as the basis for developing rational kinematic and dynamic operation conditions in order to achieve the required quality of the performed work process as well as the streamlined energy consumption. The book can be considered as one of the first solid analytical studies of the process of vibrational digging of sugar beet roots. It offers the analysis of up-to-date engineering solutions of vibrational digging tools and experimental investigations of the first vibrational lifters, the equation of oscillating motions of digging shares.

Abstract

There is considerable interest today for the reactions of anticancer metallodrugs with proteins as these interactions might feature processes that are crucial for the biodistribution, the toxicity and even the mechanism of action of this important group of anticancer agents. Valuable structural and functional information on these adducts could be derived from several biophysical studies mainly relying on the application of X-ray diffraction and ESI MS techniques. The structural and functional information achieved on the respective metallodrug-protein adducts allowed us to identify some general trends in the reactivity of anticancer metallodrugs with protein targets.

Abstract

Pichi Sermolli's work with his more than 2750 collections of plants from nearly 150 localities on the Lake Tana expedition in Ethiopia in 1937 was interrupted by World War II, but completed in 1947 at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the British Museum (Natural History), UK. It resulted in preliminary accounts of the vegetation published 1938-40 and a taxonomically arranged account in 1951, all in Italian. Pichi Sermolli's observations are difficult to locate due to the imperfect maps of the time, but in this book the authors have reconstructed the sequence of the collections, georeferenced the localities, and updated the identifications of the species. By reconstructing Pichi Sermolli's observations, it is possible to draw conclusions about the vegetation and compare with a recent model of the vegetation of Ethiopia. According to this, the vegetation of the Lake Tana Basin was a complex mosaic of woodland, scrub, forest, farmland and lake shore vegetation now difficult to interpret in detail. Pichi Sermolli's study of the vegetation in the Semien Mountains demonstrated for the first time the zonation of Ericaceous woodland and Afroalpine vegetation, within which he distinguished Carex monostachya bogs, Afroalpine grasslands with Lobelia rhynchopetalum, and stony and rocky Afroalpine vegetation. This book interprets Pichi Sermolli's observations in English and compares them with modern knowledge of the region, partly obtained by the present authors' own field work. It demonstrates how Pichi Sermolli's studies form a valuable contribution to the understanding of the Ethiopian flora and vegetation.

Abstract

Population dynamics constitutes a widespread branch of investigations which finds important applications within the realm of life science. The classical deterministic (macroscopic) approach aims at characterizing the time evolution of families of homologous entities, so to unravel the global mechanisms which drive their dynamics. As opposed to this formulation, a microscopic level of modeling can be invoked which instead focuses on the explicit rules governing the interactions among individuals. A viable tool that enables to bridge the gap between the two approaches is the van Kampen's system size expansion. In this thesis we use this method to show how the finite-size effects accounted by the microscopic level might significantly alter the dynamics of biological phenomena.

Abstract

Abstract

Enzymes, also known as biocatalysts, are proteins produced by living cells and found in a wide range of species, including animals, plants, and microorganisms. Due to their specificity, enzymes are often widely used to catalyze various chemical reactions as proficient biocatalysts in many applications. Since enzymes are proteins, they are easily denatured and lose their activity under unfavorable conditions of the surrounding environment. Therefore, in order to prolong the activity of and increase the stability of enzymes, immobilization technology is commonly used for improving the overall efficiency of enzyme catalysis. Recent developments in the discovery of stable enzymes have expanded their uses to encompass organic synthesis and the production of specialized chemicals, pharmaceutical intermediates, and agrochemicals. In order to improve enzyme performance, microbial screening or gene cloning is generally used. It is also common for enzyme studies to use a particular medium for microbiological fermentation in order to produce enzymes. This Special Issue shows that enzymes and biocatalysis have found numerous applications in various fields. These applications include the production of APIs, wastewater treatment, transformation of health ingredients, laundry detergent, fortification of feed, and biocementation. Moreover, there are also studies focusing on the immobilization and production procedures of enzymes. Finally, an extensive review of metagenomics studies related to water and soil has also been included.

Abstract

Humans have eaten nuts for thousands of years, yet their consumption was discouraged just a few decades ago due to their high-fat content. This perspective began to change in the early 1990s due to seminal publications from the Adventist Health Study, which showed that nut consumption significantly improved heart health-related outcomes. Many randomized clinical trials, epidemiological studies, and in vitro/in vivo mechanistic studies have since explored the role of eating nuts and its relation to health. Similarly, dried fruits have been scrutinized due to their concentrated sugar content despite their non-sodium micronutrient and fiber density. Due to accumulating evidence on nut and dried fruit intake and health outcomes, an international scientific meeting was organized for leading experts to examine and recapitulate in detail what is well known and established and what avenues of knowledge are still lacking in nut and dried fruit research. This book summarizes proceedings from this international scientific meeting and the latest information relating to: (1) energy balance and body weight; (2) insulin resistance and diabetes; (3) lipoproteins and dyslipidemia; (4) gastrointestinal system; (5) inflammation and oxidation; (6) cardiovascular disease; (7) cognition; (8) cancer; (9) dried fruit and health; (10) future lines of research. These findings highlight the beneficial health potentials of nuts for researchers, health professionals, other stakeholders, and the public while simultaneously pinpointing areas for further investigation to continue informing and guiding health practices and policies.

Abstract

If the NHS and its healthcare companies have only recently become aware of being faced with a "new normality", and, therefore, of having to "shed their skin" to face the challenges connected to it, a new normality for Life Science companies, perhaps best described as a perfect storm, it has become a reality at least since the early years of the new century. The world in which access to the market, the introduction of innovation, and consolidation of sales were built around the supervision of regulatory processes and the share of voice towards the prescribers have become much more complex. A context that many define as VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous). In this book, therefore, both the reasons that prompted Life Science companies to rethink their strategy by dedicating increasing attention to the political and institutional decision-makers of the Regions and the management of healthcare companies, and the internal organization to support and strengthen their "market access" capabilities. Through the different perspectives - academic, consultancy, managerial - of the three authors, the logic that has guided the "change of skin" of Life Science companies is explored, as the functional tools for market access, the different declinations that this activity has had in the sector, future scenarios and further evolutionary prospects, the connection with the other company functions - sales, marketing, medical management, institutional affairs, administration - and many technical aspects which are the heart of the skills and toolbox required of those who want to successfully develop a career right in the field of market access.

Abstract

Neurodegenerative disorders encompass a broad range of sporadic and/or familial debilitating conditions characterized by the progressive dysfunction and loss of selective neuronal populations, determining different clinical phenotypes. Emerging research data indicate an interplay of genetic factors and epigenetic mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative processes, which lead to increased prevalence of neurodegenerative disorders. In concert with the constant increase in the aging population, neurodegenerative disorders currently represent a major challenge to public health worldwide. Despite recent advances in clinical and preclinical research, the pathogenesis of these disorders still remains poorly understood, without effective treatments being available to halt the neurodegenerative processes, but rather aiming at relieving symptoms. Therefore, a critical evaluation of current research data and in-depth understanding of the molecular mechanisms that lead to neurodegeneration are crucial in order to identify potential therapeutic targets that can pave the way to the development of novel and promising therapies. This Special Issue is focused on novel molecular data in the field of neurodegeneration that associate with the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. We are particularly interested in original articles and reviews that provide new insights into the main molecular pathogenic mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders, aiming to identify potential biomarkers and novel therapeutic strategies.
