"This new book analyses the strategies, usages and wider implications of crowdsourcing and crowdfunding platforms in the culture and communication industries that are reshaping economic, organizational and social logics. Platforms are the object of considerable hype with a growing global presence. Relying on individual contributions coordinated by social media to finance cultural production (and carry out promotional tasks) is a significant shift, especially when supported by morphing public policies, supposedly enhancing cultural diversity and accessibility. The aim of this book is to propose a critical analysis of these phenomena by questioning what follows from decisions to outsource modes of creation and funding to consumers. Drawing on research carried out within the 'Collab' programme backed by the French National Research Agency, the book considers how platforms are used to organize cultural labour and/or to control usages, following a logic of suggestion rather than overt injunction. Four key areas are considered: the history of crowdfunding as a system; whose interests crowdfunding may serve; the implications for digital labour and lastly crowdfunding's interface with globalization and contemporary capitalism. The book concludes with an assessment of claims that crowdfunding can democratize culture."

The work analyses different forms and effects of higher education funding. In the beginning, the determinants of higher education spending by the German federal states are studied. Then the thesis focuses on the recent introduction of tuition fees at public universities in Germany to identify the effects of tuition fees on the enrollment decision of first year students. In addition, the impact of tuition fees is compared with the effect of administrative fees.

"Leiter setzte Geld in den Sand" titelte die Kasseler Lokalzeitung HNA im August 2017 und brachte geleakte Informationen aus dem Aufsichtsrat der documenta 14, einer weltweit renommierten Kunstausstellung, an die Öffentlichkeit: Die documenta gGmbH stehe kurz vor der Zahlungsunfähigkeit, ein Defizit von ca. 7 Millionen Euro wird erwartet. Dieses soll durch die teils öffentliche Finanzierung voraussichtlich mit Steuermitteln aufgefangen werden. Es beginnt eine breite Debatte in der sich Personen aus Politik, Kulturbetrieb und Öffentlichkeit in Interviews, Petitionen oder Leserkommentaren beteiligen und in der es um den Einsatz von Steuern, die Verantwortung von Kulturinstitutionen und die künstlerische Freiheit geht. Die Untersuchung nimmt digitale multimodalen Texte, die darin verwendeten Metaphern, intertextuellen Geflechte und die beteiligten Akteure in den Blick und rekonstruiert nicht nur die Debatte der documenta 14, sondern widmet sich darüber hinaus dem strittigen Verhältnis von Kunst und Ökonomie und wie dieses unser aktuelles Kulturfördersystem beeinflusst. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die verborgenen Mechanismen aufzuzeigen, die mediale Diskurse strukturieren, die Grenzen von Sagbarkeitsräumen zu erforschen und zu einer Sensibilisierung bei öffentlichen Prozessen der Meinungsbildung beizutragen. The documenta 14 made headlines due to its significant deficit, sparking a discussion about the use of taxpayer money in the art scene. The debate gave rise to a struggle for interpretative authority: Who has access to discourse? Who is able to assert their perspective on the crisis? What metaphors shape our view of reality? And what role does the critical relationship between art and the economy play in these discussions?

Weighing up the costs and benefits of economic interdependence in a finance-driven world, this book argues that globalization, understood and promoted as absolute freedom for all forms of capital, has been oversold to the Global South, and that the South should be as selective about globalization as the North. 'Liberalization, Financial Instability and Economic Development' challenges the orthodoxy on the link between financial deepening and economic growth, as well as that between the efficiency of financial markets and the benefits of liberalization. Ultimately, the author urges developing countries to control capital flows and asset bubbles, preventing financial fragility and crises, and recommends regional policy options for managing capital flows and exchange rates.
