Abstract

"Following the devastating Tohoku earthquake and tsunami that afflicted Japan in March 2011, some of the reactors of the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant began to release radioactive material into the environment. This study draws lessons from this experience regarding technological countermeasures to radioactive contamination to improve responses to future radiological or nuclear contingencies. Specifically, it focuses on how technologies were used to measure contamination over space and time, to limit the dispersal of radioactive material in the environment, to decontaminate areas or items, and to store radioactive materials for extended periods. The authors gathered data by conducting extensive literature reviews and dozens of interviews with experts in both Japan and the United States. The report analyzes how technologies were used successfully and identifies capability gaps that could be redressed through novel technologies or improved use of existing technologies. This is an open access book that provides holistic information on the radioactive contamination of forests. Abstract

This open access book summarizes the latest scientific findings regarding the biological effects of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) accident in 2011. Various cases of changes in animals and organisms have been reported since the FNPP accident. However, it is often unknown whether they are actually due to radiation, since the dose or dose-rate are not necessarily associated with the changes observed. This book brings together the works of radiation biologists and ecologists to provide reliable radioecology data and gives insight into future radioprotection. The book examines the environmental pollution and radiation exposure, and contains valuable data from abandoned livestock in the ex-evacuation zone and from wild animals including invertebrates and vertebrates, aqueous and terrestrial animals, and plants that are subjected to long-term exposure in the area still affected by radiation. It also analyzes dose evaluation, and offers new perspectives gained from the accident, as well as an overview for future studies to promote radioprotection of humans and the ecosystem. Since the biological impact of radiation is influenced by various factors, it is difficult to scientifically define the effects of low-dose/low-dose-rate radiation. However, the detailed research data presented can be combined with the latest scientific and technological advances, such as artificial intelligence, to provide new insights in the future. Abstract

This book presents the results from the Japanese Fisheries Research Agency’s 3-year intensive monitoring of radionuclides in a variety of fish, plankton, benthos, and their living environments after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) accident in March 2011. The book reveals the dynamics of contamination processes in marine and freshwater fish, mediated by the contamination of water, sediments, and food organisms; it also clarifies the mechanisms by which large variations in the level of contamination occurs among individual fish. Most importantly, the book includes a large amount of original measurement data collected in situ and for the first time assesses diffusion of radiocesium across the Pacific using both in situ data and a numerical simulation model. Also introduced are several new approaches to evaluate the impact of the release of radionuclides, including the measurement of radiation emission from an otolith section to identify the main period of contamination in fish. The FNPP accident represents a rare instance where the environmental radioactivity level was elevated steeply through atmospheric fallout and direct discharge of radioactive water into the sea over a short period of time. Replete with precise scientific data, this book will serve as an important resource for research in fields such as fishery science, oceanography, ecology, and environmentology, and also as a solid basis for protecting fisheries from damage resulting from harmful rumors among the general public.

Abstract

L'humanité trouvera-t-elle de quoi nourrir 9 milliards d'hommes en 2050, dans un contexte climatique probablement plus difficile ? L'inquiétude n'est pas nouvelle, mais la croissance démographique s'est emballée dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, et la crainte d'une crise alimentaire mondiale est réapparue. Certes, les progrès des technologies agricoles ont permis, au plan global, de maintenir le niveau nutritionnel moyen pendant les années de la "Révolution verte", mais la situation restait loin d'être satisfaisante, puisque environ 850 millions de personnes étaient sousalimentées au début du XXIe siècle. Or de nouvelles inquiétudes se font jour : les surfaces cultivables ne sont plus guère extensibles, la productivité des sols atteint des niveaux qui risquent de les endommager de façon irréversible, les prix de l'énergie et des intrants indispensables à l'agriculture moderne sont à la hausse... Et les perspectives de changements climatiques ne sont pas rassurantes. De nouveaux progrès technologiques permettront-ils de dépasser, une fois encore, les contraintes naturelles et démographiques ? Cet ouvrage rappelle d'abord ces contraintes démographiques, climatiques et environnementales qui pèseront sur la disponibilité de ressources à l'horizon 2050, et traite ensuite des facteurs d'évolution de la demande alimentaire, des moyens techniques et économiques d'y faire face, et enfin des conditions d'un équilibre possible. Une synthèse est proposée en début de volume. Des recommandations y sont faites, destinées aux pouvoirs publics français pour les éclairer sur leur politique nationale et internationale, mais aussi à la société civile, qui est concernée car les problèmes ne sont pas seulement scientifiques ou technologiques : ils mettent aussi en jeu les comportements individuels des producteurs et des consommateurs. Trois domaines où il faut agir sans tarder sont mis en valeur : la nutrition et les habitudes alimentaires, puis la démographie, et enfin l'économie mondiale et le commerce international. Les recommandations portent ensuite sur la production agricole et les questions d'environnement, puis sur la prévention, l'anticipation et la gestion des situations de crise, hélas quasi inévitables.

Abstract

Ten years have passed since the nuclear accident occurred in Fukushima, Japan, following the Great East Japan earthquake. Thereafter, many people around the world have been concerned about the risks posed by radiation. They still believe that even a small amount of radiation exposure will affect human health. In reality, however, there are many natural radionuclides in the environment, which emit a variety of types of radiation. Although it is well known that there is a positively linear relationship between acute radiation exposure and cancer risk in atomic bomb survivors, the risk of chronic radiation exposure due to natural radionuclides cannot be well explained to people who have lived in high-background radiation areas for many generations. Therefore, more studies in this research field are required to obtain new scientific findings. In order to promote further scientific activities, it will be the best for us to understand the current status of this field by summarizing what we have apprehended so far. This Special Issue will highlight measurement data, methodologies, radiation biology, and risk assessment related to radiation.

Abstract

This book explores if and how Russian policies towards the Far East region of the country – and East Asia more broadly – have changed since the onset of the Ukraine crisis and Russia’s annexation of Crimea. Following the 2014 annexation and the subsequent enactment of a sanctions regime against the country, the Kremlin has emphasized the eastern vector in its external relations. But to what extent has Russia’s 'pivot to the East' intensified or changed in nature – domestically and internationally – since the onset of the current crisis in relations with the West? Rather than taking the declared 'pivot' as a fact and exploring the consequences of it, the contributors to this volume explore whether a pivot has indeed happened or if what we see today is the continuation of longer-duration trends, concerns and ambitions. Helge Blakkisrud is Head of the Research Group on Russia, Eurasia and the Arctic at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), Norway. His research interests include Russian regional politics, centre–region relations and federalism, as well as nation-building, nationalism and national identity in Russia and Eurasia. His most recent books are The Governors’ Last Stand: Federal Bargaining in Russia's Transition to Appointed Regional Heads, 2005–2009 (2015) and The New Russian Nationalism: Imperialism, Ethnicity and Authoritarianism, 2000–2015 (co-edited with Pål Kolstø, 2016). Elana Wilson Rowe is Head of the Research Group on Emerging Powers and International Development at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), Norway; and Adjunct Professor at Nord University, Norway. Her present research interests include Russian foreign policy, particularly in the areas of energy and climate change, and Arctic politics. She is the author of Russian Climate Politics (2013), editor of Russia and the North (2009) and co-editor of The Multilateral Dimension in Russian Foreign Policy (with Stina Torjesen, 2009) and Russia’s Encounter with Globalization (with Julie Wilhelmsen, 2011).

Abstract

Eine belastbare Methode zu entwickeln, um den Ressourceneinsatz zu bewerten, ist das Ziel dieses Buches. Notwendig ist dies, da das starke Wirtschaftswachstum der letzten Jahrzehnte zu einer intensiven Beanspruchung natürlicher Ressourcen geführt hat. Mit ihrer steigenden Nutzung gehen auch zusätzliche Belastungen der Umwelt sowie Restriktionen der Verfügbarkeit von Ressourcen einher. Aus diesen Gründen ist ein effizienter Einsatz von Ressourcen als wichtiger Beitrag zu einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung erforderlich. Die ESSENZ-Methode (Integrierte Methode zur ganzheitlichen Berechnung/Messung von Ressourceneffizienz) wurde in einer Kooperation der Technischen Universität Berlin mit den Industriepartnern Daimler AG, Deutsches Kupferinstitut Berufsverband e. V., Evonik Industries AG, Siemens AG, ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG und Wissenschaftlicher Gerätebau Dr. Ing. Herbert Knauer GmbH entwickelt. Sie unterstützt die umfassende Messung und Bewertung von Ressourceneffizienz innerhalb der vier Dimensionen „Verfügbarkeit“, „Gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz“, „Umweltauswirkungen“ und „Nutzen“. Um diese vier Dimensionen wissenschaftlich abzubilden, werden 21 anwendbare Indikatoren entwickelt und vorgestellt. Die ESSENZ-Methode kann sowohl für die Analyse und Optimierung eines einzelnen Produktes als auch für den Vergleich mehrerer Produktalternativen verwendet werden. Ihre Anwendbarkeit ist für Metalle und fossile Rohstoffe bereits erprobt.
