This book provides an overview of the Internet of Things (IoT) - covering new ideas, concepts, research and innovation to enable the development of IoT technologies in a global context. The work is intended as a standalone book in a series covering the activities of the Internet of Things European Research Cluster (IERC) - including research, technological innovation, validation, and deployment. The book chapters build on the developments and innovative ideas put forward by the IERC, the IoT European Large-Scale Pilots Programme and the IoT European Security and Privacy Projects - presenting new concepts, ideas and future IoT trends and ways of integrating open data frameworks and IoT marketplaces into larger deployment ecosystems. The IoT and Industrial Internet of Things technologies are moving towards hyperautomated solutions - combining hyperconnectivity, artificial intelligence (AI), distributed ledger technologies and virtual/augmented extended reality, with edge computing and deep edge processing becoming an assertive factor across industries for implementing intelligent distributed computing resources and data to keep the efficient data exchange and processing local to reduce latency, exploit the sensing/actuating capabilities and enable greater autonomy.Expanding the adoption of consumer, business, industrial and tactile IoT requires further development of hyperautomated IoT concepts for collaborative solutions involving machines and humans to expand augmented creativity at the application level using AI to optimise the industrial processes and progress towards a symbiotic economy based on distributed federated cloud/edge infrastructure allowing resource sharing in the form of computing, memory and analytics capabilities. The advances of autonomous IoT applications delivering services in real-time encompasses development in servitisation, robotisation, automation and hyperconnectivity, which are essential for the rapid evolution of industrial enterprises in the new digital era. The rise of digital twins integrated into IoT platforms as fully interactive elements embedded into the simulation and optimisation environment, as well as the embedment of AI techniques and methods, enhances the accuracy and performance of models in the various IoT and Industrial Internet of Things applications. The convergence of technologies to provide scalable, interoperable IoT-enabled applications pushed the requirements for high bandwidth, low latency and robust and dependable connectivity to support the industry's demand for deeper integration and improved analytics to deliver sustainable competitive advantage products and services, enabling digital transformation with a focus on new business models.Safety and security are interlinked for the next wave of IoT technologies and applications and combined, prove a greater value for rapid adoption. The new IoT technologies are essential for facilitating sustainable development, reducing energy consumption and, by supporting the optimisation of products and processes, mitigating unnecessary carbon emissions - thereby reducing the environmental impact through real-time data collection, analysis, exchange, and processing.

Time delay is very often encountered in various technical systems, such as electric, pneumatic and hydraulic networks, chemical processes, long transmission lines, robotics, etc. The existence of pure time lag, regardless if it is present in the control or/and the state, may cause undesirable system transient response, or even instability. Consequently, the problem of controllability, observability, robustness, optimization, adaptive control, pole placement and particularly stability and robustness stabilization for this class of systems, has been one of the main interests for many scientists and researchers during the last five decades.

The management of time and events is central to various domains of informatics, from embedded circuits and software programs in all sorts of objects to musical creation, or the simulation of physical phenomena. Yet this subject receives little attention in classical informatics. This lecture presents different types of time and event modelling associated with new programming languages. It discusses the notions of density of the moment and of hierarchical and multiform times created by the rep...

Real-time and networked embedded systems are important bidirectional bridges between the physical and the information worlds. Embedded intelligence is increasingly pervading industry, infrastructure, and public and private spaces, being identified as an emerging societal and economic "neural system" that supports both societal changes and economic growth. As cost/performance improves, objects connected in everyday life increasingly rely on embedded intelligence in an ever-growing array of application fields, specialized technologies, and engineering disciplines. While this process gradually builds the IoT, it exposes a series of specific non-trivial timing and other extra-functional requirements and system properties that are less common in other computing areas. The ten articles in this book propose solutions to the specific open problems of cyber-physical and real-time embedded systems applicable to both traditional application domains, such as industrial automation and control, energy management, automotive, aerospace and defense systems, as well as emerging domains, such as medical devices, household appliances, mobile multimedia, gaming, and entertainment systems.

Embedded software demands intensive testing of functional and non-functional requirements. Automation of such tests is performed with different technologies. Source-code level tests require specialized unit-testing tools. Tests of the high-level behavior of control systems follow the model-, software- and hardware-in-the-loop approach. This work studies the integration of such system-level and source-code level tests. The focus lies on a new programming language to implement test cases.

The “Internet of Things” will be a major part of the Internet of the Future. However, there is still no overall agreement on a common definition of this “Internet of Things”, nor on its economic importance – and on the potential risks it may bring. A close analysis of several foresight reports and the observation of innovations already deployed have enabled the authors to highlight technical, economic and socio-political uncertainties that have a bearing on this evolution of the Internet and to propose a European approach based on both excellent applied research and established principles of public policy.

A unique feature of this open access textbook is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental knowledge in embedded systems, with applications in cyber-physical systems and the Internet of things. It starts with an introduction to the field and a survey of specification models and languages for embedded and cyber-physical systems. It provides a brief overview of hardware devices used for such systems and presents the essentials of system software for embedded systems, including real-time operating systems. The author also discusses evaluation and validation techniques for embedded systems and provides an overview of techniques for mapping applications to execution platforms, including multi-core platforms. Embedded systems have to operate under tight constraints and, hence, the book also contains a selected set of optimization techniques, including software optimization techniques. The book closes with a brief survey on testing. This fourth edition has been updated and revised to reflect new trends and technologies, such as the importance of cyber-physical systems (CPS) and the Internet of things (IoT), the evolution of single-core processors to multi-core processors, and the increased importance of energy efficiency and thermal issues. Provides a semester-length textbook, with comprehensive coverage of the fundamental knowledge in embedded and cyber-physical systems; Links modeling and hardware, in order to bridge the gap between hardware and software, allowing readers to put these into perspective; Couples practical aspects of embedded system design with an introduction to more theoretical aspects; Includes extensive exercises for each chapter; Videos, software, and PowerPoint slides are separately available.
