This book explores the lives of nuns in medieval German convents, focusing on their roles in love, politics, and religion. It highlights how these women held significant influence as 'brides of Christ' and played vital roles within their communities. The authors, Henrike Lähnemann and Eva Schlotheuber, delve into various aspects of convent life, including education, family dynamics, music, and the impact of the Reformation. The work draws from unique historical sources, such as a convent diary and a collection of letters, to provide insight into the nuns' experiences and their resistance to Lutheran reforms. Aimed at those interested in medieval history and women's roles in religious contexts, the book seeks to illuminate the overlooked contributions of these nuns.

In this study on the musical lives of nuns in colonial Latin America, author Cesar D. Favila argues that the sounds of cloisters were deemed essential for the promotion of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and, by extension, the salvation of early modern society. Through analysis of these "immaculate sounds," rarely studied archival sources, rulebooks, devotional literature, and nun's biographies, Favila locates women's agency within a hierarchical society that silenced some women and required others to sing.

The study is the first monograph devoted to the musical culture of a female order in Poland. It is a result of in-depth research into musical, narrative, economic, and prosopographic sources surviving in libraries and archives. Focused on the musical practice of nuns, the book also points to the context of spirituality, morality, and culture of the post-Trident era. The author indicates the transformation of the musical activity of the nuns during the 17th and 18th century and discusses its various kinds: plainsong, Latin and Polish polyphonic song, polichoral, keyboard, vocal-instrumental and chamber music. She reflects on the role of music in liturgy and monastic events and in everyday life of cloistered women, describes the recruitment of musically gifted candidates, and the scriptorial activity of nuns.

The mendicant orders, essential agents of the spirituality of the last centuries of the Middle Ages, are intimately linked to their inhabited universe: their convents. Based on their own structural, aesthetic and functional principles, these architectural complexes with a clearly polyvalent vocation, responding to the religious, community and intellectual activities of the religious as well as to the needs of the faithful, constituted the edifying counterpoint of the apostolic activity and the pattern of life of beggars. Deliberately settled in urban environments, they created decisive bridges with the outside world, thus opening up their establishments, which, because of their thoughtful establishment, were able to integrate and adapt dynamically in reception areas. The frequent foundations of the convents in the sensitive areas of the cities and the creation, in the churches and in the conventual buildings, of suitable spaces and architectural arrangements satisfied, sometimes even preceded, the spiritual aspirations, even social, of the flocks. This study, combining archaeological data with information provided by archives, historical sources and ancient graphic documents, embraces the female and male convents of the four main begging orders: Dominicans, Franciscans, Carmelites and Augustinians. Moreover, in the geographical area chosen, namely the north of France and the former Southern Netherlands, the conventual architecture had until then been little explored.

"On October 16, 1943, the Jews of Rome were targeted for arrest and deportation. The Nazis, the Vatican, and the Jews of Rome examines why?and more importantly how?it could have been avoided, featuring new evidence and insight into the Vatican?s involvement. At the time, Rome was within reach of the Allies, but the overwhelming force of the Wehrmacht, Gestapo, and SS in Rome precluded direct confrontation. Moral condemnations would not have worked, nor would direct confrontation by the Italians, Jewish leadership, or even the Vatican. Gallo underscores the necessity of determining what courses of actions most likely would have spared Italian Jews from the gas chambers. Examining the historical context and avoiding normative or counterfactual assertions, this book draws upon archival sources ranging from diaries to intelligence intercepts in English, Italian, and German. With antisemitism on the rise today and the last remaining witnesses passing away, it is essential to understand what happened in 1943. The Nazis, the Vatican, and the Jews of Rome grapples with this particular, awful episode within the larger, horrifying story of the Holocaust. Despite the inadequacy of memory, we must continue to attempt to make sense of the inexplicable. "
