Conceived as a companion volume to his Onomastics of the Song of Roland (2017), Beckmann's eighteen Collected Essays on Old French Epic Poetry presents a multi-faceted panorama about the origins of the ancient chansons de geste. It includes the chansons of Ogier, Roland, William (Guillaume), Saxon epic poetry, the Pilgrimage of Charlemagne and Berthe with the Big Feet, and Renaut de Montauban. Der Band ist vor allem gedacht als companion volume zu Gustav Adolf Beckmanns Onomastik des Rolandsliedes (2017). Wie dort bestimmen auch hier zwei zentrale Aspekte den Großteil des Bildes, doch hier gestreut über die altfranzösische Epik als Gattung: Fragen der Onomastik und solche der Historizität des Dargestellten. Auch hier greifen sie meist sogar ineinander: Personennamen wie Audegarius (+ Oscheri) ~ Oggero Spatacurta ~ Ogier, Malduit der Schatzmeister, (Ricardus) Baligan, Nikephóros ~ Hugue li Forz, Witburg ~ Wigburg ~ Guibourc, Alpais, A(da)lgis (→ Malgis/Amalgis), Toponyme wie Belin, Lucena ~ Luiserne, Worms ~ Garmaise, Dortmund ~ Tremoigne, Esch-sur-Sûre ~ Ascane, Avroy ~ Auridon ~ Oridon ~ Dordone, Pierrepont sowie das doppelte Hydronym Rura ~ Rune und Erunia ~ Rune bringen jeweils ein Stück ihrer aufschlussreichen Geschichte mit sich. Combining extraordinary learning with grace of style, Robert Briffault provides in this volume the first comprehensive work in English on the heritage of the medieval troubadours, the traveling "reporters" and often the sole entertainers of their age. The lays which these remarkable poets sang, with their intense lyricism and unique treatment of erotic themes—so unlike that found in the literature of Greece or Rome or of barbarian cultures—sprang from the Provencial lands of southern France. Here, in the twelfth century, the popularity of Islamic songs of the neighboring Hispano-Mauresque civilization contributed to the development of a poetry which "answered the mood of a feudal society newly awakened to its native uncouthness by contact with the luxury of the Orient." Briffault clearly establishes that the largely non-Western idiom of the troubadours soon dominated the language of European poetry. His provocative essays on Dante and Shakespeare illuminate the particular impact of the troubadour tradition, so long ignored by literary historians, on Italian and English verse.

Genre ou plutôt forme fictionnelle et poétique profondément originale au regard de la tradition épique antique ou de ses avatars modernes, texte déroutant entre récit et chant, l’épopée médiévale exige une approche particulière pour qu’en soient saisis les enjeux, les évolutions et les permanences. Aliscans, chanson de geste de la fin du XIIe s., représente une sorte d’étape seconde au sein du cycle dans lequel elle prend place. Par rapport aux œuvres premières – au sens de la transmission manuscrite – que sont La Chanson de Roland ou La Chanson de Guillaume, elle apparaît comme une réécriture, ou tout simplement une « écriture », une organisation réfléchie de la matière épique donnée dans le Guillaume, son modèle. Invités à une rencontre à l’ENS, des spécialistes de la Chanson de geste se sont proposés de dessiner les linéaments d’une définition. Les communications ont offert un large éventail de points de vue et de thèmes qui permettaient non seulement de saisir la diversité et la richesse du genre, mais aussi de mettre en perspective Aliscans au sein d’un vaste ensemble, débordant ainsi largement le seul intérêt d’une préparation à l’agrégation dont elle est une des œuvres au programme.
