Geschiedenis en ontwerp onderzoekt de vele mogelijkheden die er zijn om cultureel erfgoed te betrekken in plannen en ontwerpen voor de toekomst. Niet alles hoeft noodzakelijkerwijs te worden bewaard, geïnventariseerd of op monumentenlijsten geplaatst. In sommige gevallen kan sloop juist een bevrijding zijn. Om een gewetensvolle omgang met erfgoed te verankeren in de ruimtelijke inrichting is allereerst een toegankelijke kennisinfrastructuur van groot belang. Daarnaast is een praktische 'gereedschapskist' nodig voor de omgang met erfgoed in de planvorming, het ruimtelijk ontwerp en het erfgoedbeleid. Een dergelijk fundament – in dit handboek geschraagd door beschouwingen van 25 deskundige auteurs van uiteenlopende universiteiten – biedt inzicht in de mogelijkheden om in transformatieopgaven draden te spannen tussen verleden en toekomst, tussen geschiedenis en ontwerp. Raymond Martin Marie Ghislain Lemaire (1921-1997) est un professeur belge d'université, historien de l'art et praticien de la rénovation de monuments et sites dans le monde entier, co-fondateur d'ICOMOS en 1965, dont il devint le premier Secrétaire Général avant d'en assurer la présidence de 1975 à 1981. Par cette publication, le comité belge de l'ICOMOS tenait à lui rendre hommage, en sollicitant la collaboration de plusieurs personnalités, collègues, disciples et amis, qui ont dressé son portrait et les étapes de son parcours hors du commun, marqué par un engagement constant dans l'enseignement, la recherche et l'action sur le terrain.

This premier volume of the Getty Conservation Institute's Readings in Conservation series is the first comprehensive collection of texts on the conservation of art and architecture to be published in the English language. Designed for students of art history as well as conservation, the book consists of forty-six texts, some never before translated into English and many originally published only in obscure or foreign journals. The thirty major art historians and scholars represented raise questions such as when to restore, what to preserve, and how to maintain aesthetic character.
