Abstract

Computational fluid dynamics, usually abbreviated as CFD, is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical analysis and algorithms to solve and analyze problems that involve fluid flows. Computers are used to perform the calculations required to simulate the interaction of liquids and gases with surfaces defined by boundary conditions. All computational methods are acceptable (finite difference, finite volume, finite elements), as well as commercial codes such as Fluent. The numerical method will be considered as the mean to treat an unsolved fluid mechanics problem. Although in recent years thousands of papers have been published in the field of Fluid Mechanics, there are simple and fundamentals problems that have not been treated until now. Artificial cases with extraordinary boundary conditions and cases, which are not related to reality, will not be accepted. Unsolved problems from all fields are welcomed. The results must be accurate and the review process will be very thorough.

Abstract

The phenomena related to the flow of fluids are generally complex, and difficult to quantify. New approaches - considering points of view still not explored - may introduce useful tools in the study of Hydrodynamics and the related transport phenomena. The details of the flows and the properties of the fluids must be considered on a very small scale perspective. Consequently, new concepts and tools are generated to better describe the fluids and their properties. This volume presents conclusions about advanced topics of calculated and observed flows. It contains eighteen chapters, organized in five sections: 1) Mathematical Models in Fluid Mechanics, 2) Biological Applications and Biohydrodynamics, 3) Detailed Experimental Analyses of Fluids and Flows, 4) Radiation-, Electro-, Magnetohydrodynamics, and Magnetorheology, 5) Special Topics on Simulations and Experimental Data. These chapters present new points of view about methods and tools used in Hydrodynamics.

Abstract

The constant evolution of the calculation capacity of the modern computers implies in a permanent effort to adjust the existing numerical codes, or to create new codes following new points of view, aiming to adequately simulate fluid flows and the related transport of physical properties. Additionally, the continuous improving of laboratory devices and equipment, which allow to record and measure fluid flows with a higher degree of details, induces to elaborate specific experiments, in order to shed light in unsolved aspects of the phenomena related to these flows. This volume presents conclusions about different aspects of calculated and observed flows, discussing the tools used in the analyses. It contains eighteen chapters, organized in four sections: 1) Smoothed Spheres, 2) Models and Codes in Fluid Dynamics, 3) Complex Hydraulic Engineering Applications, 4) Hydrodynamics and Heat/Mass Transfer. The chapters present results directed to the optimization of the methods and tools of Hydrodynamics.

Abstract

The purpose of this book is to put together recent developments on sediment transport and morphological processes. There are twelve chapters in this book contributed by different authors who are currently involved in relevant research. First three chapters provide information on basic and advanced flow mechanisms including turbulence and movement of particles in water. Examples of computational procedures for sediment transport and morphological changes are given in the next five chapters. These include empirical predictions and numerical computations. Chapters nine and ten present some insights on environmental concerns with sediment transport. Last two contributions deal with two large-scale case studies related to changes in the transport and provenance of glacial marine sediments, and processes involving land slides.

Abstract

Whereas the field of Fluid Mechanics can be described as complicated, mathematically challenging, and esoteric, it is also imminently practical. It is central to a wide variety of issues that are important not only technologically, but also sociologically. This book highlights a cross-section of methods in Fluid Mechanics, each of which illustrates novel ideas of the researchers and relates to one or more issues of high interest during the early 21st century. The challenges include multiphase flows, compressibility, nonlinear dynamics, flow instability, changing solid-fluid boundaries, and fluids with solid-like properties. The applications relate problems such as weather and climate prediction, air quality, fuel efficiency, wind or wave energy harvesting, landslides, erosion, noise abatement, and health care.

Abstract

A physically-based dislocation theory of plasticity is derived within an extended continuum mechanical context. Thermodynamically consistent flow rules at the grain boundaries are derived. With an analytical solution of a three-phase periodic laminate, dislocation pile-up at grain boundaries and dislocation transmission through the grain boundaries are investigated. For the finite element implementations, numerically efficient approaches are introduced based on accumulated field variables.
