In Toward a Liberalism, Richard Flathman shows why and how political theory can contribute to the quality of moral and political practice without violating, as empiricist- and idealist-based theories tend to do, liberal commitments to individuality and plurality. Exploring the tense but inevitable relationship between liberalism and authority, he advances a theory of democratic citizenship tempered by appreciation of the ways in which citizenship is implicated with and augments authority. Flathman examines the relationship of individual rights to freedom on one hand and to authority and power on the other, rejecting the quest for a single homogenous and authoritative liberal theory.

Cemeteries house the dead, but gravemarkers are fashioned by the living, who record on them not only their pleasures, sorrows, and hopes for an afterlife, but also more than they realize of their history, ethnicity, and culture. Richard Meyer has gathered twelve original essays examining burial grounds through the centuries and across the land to give a broad understanding of the history and cultural values of communities, regions, and American society at large.

While many works on Kant's theory of knowledge place primary emphasis on assessing the validity of Kant's arguments, Richard E. Aquila aims first at clarifying the meaning of basic claims and concepts as Kant himself understood them. Representational Mind offers an interpretation of some of the most fundamental epistemological distinctions that Kant drew: between matter and form, intuition and concept, and things in themselves and appearances. Aquila's analysis centers on a theory of consciousness as the conceptual determination of intentional objects, the structure of which is grounded in forms of intuition. This approach, which distinguishes between concepts as mere predicates of judgments and as representations that phenomenologically inform intuitions, leads to a fuller grasp of the role of conceptualization in thinking. Shedding new light on the meaning of Kant's Transcendental Aesthetic, Aquila also gives extended treatment to imag- ination and schematism. The concluding chapter is devoted to the problem of self- awareness and the flow of time . An important contribution to the dialogue between phenomenological and analytical perspectives, Representational Mind will be of interest to scholars and students concerned with the history of modern philosophy and with philosophical problems involving the nature of mind and the intentionality of consciousness.

Elaborating a theory of consciousness that Kant made only partially explicit in the Transcendental Deduction of the Critique of Pure Reason, Richard E. Aquila offers a novel reading of Kant's theories of synthesis and conceptual rules, productive and reproductive imagination, the distinction between judgments of perception and experience, and the relations between self and objects. Aquila builds on the Transcendental Aesthetic's view of the formation of intuitional consciousness out of sensory matter and proposes a theory of concept formation, in the Transcendental Deduction, out of analogously conceived bodies of imaginative matter. Kant is seen here as offering a formidable synthesis of the purely animal and the distinctively human in human consciousness.

"Soon after Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF) began in March 2003, RAND Arroyo Center began compiling an authoritative account of the planning and execution of combat and stability operations in Iraq through 2004 in order to identify key issues that could affect Army plans, operational concepts, doctrine, and other Title 10 functions. "The resulting analysis, completed in January 2006, will interest those involved in organizing, training, and equipping military forces to plan for, deploy to, participate in, and support joint and multinational operations. Although focused primarily on Army forces and activities, the analysis also describes aspects of joint and multinational operations. RAND analysts collected the information in this report from many sources, including unit after-action reports, compilations of lessons learned, official databases, media reports, other contemporary records, and interviews with key participants in OIF. "This report presents a broad overview of the study findings based on unclassified source material. It traces the operation from its root causes in the first Gulf War through operations up to approximately the end of June 2004. It addresses strategy, planning, and organization for OIF; air and ground force operations; personnel, deployment, and logistics issues; coalition operations; the occupation that followed combat operations; and civil-military operations. Also, because the research conducted for this report covers events only through June 2004, events that occurred after that date would alter some of the conclusions and recommendations. In other cases, some recommendations might already have been implemented in whole or in part. Nevertheless, the report's recommendations are provided as they were originally formulated."--Back cover.
