Na de onafhankelijkheid duiken de eerste populaire schilderijen op aan de muren van Congolese huiskamers. Die schilderijen worden beschreven als ‘conversation pieces' – ‘gespreksstukken' – want hun belang schuilt niet in het feit dat het kunstvoorwerpen zijn, maar in de boodschap die ze uitdragen. De betekenis van de afbeeldingen ligt niet altijd vast: iedereen kan er zijn eigen interpretatie aan geven. Ze zetten aan tot reflectie en discussies over de dagelijkse bekommeringen.De Congolese populaire schilderkunst wordt vaak als een koloniale stijl bestempeld, maar in feite sluit ze aan op de lange geschiedenis van tekencultuur die vóór kolonisatie in de Democratische Republiek Congo bestond.In 2013 verwierf het Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika een belangrijke collectie van bijna 2000 doeken die verzameld werden tussen 1968 en 2012 door Bogumil Jewsiewicki en zijn Congolese collega's in de DRC, in 15 steden: Beni, Bukama, Bunia, Butembo, Goma, Isiro, Kananga, Kikwit, Kinshasa, Kisangani, Kolwezi, Lubumbashi,Matadi, Mbandaka en Mbuji-Mayi. Deze collectie is niet alleen belangrijk door de omvang en het aantal schilderijen, maar ook door de archieven, foto's van ateliers, levensverhalen, interviews met de kunstenaars en kronieken die erbij horen.

OER is een boek over wortels. Over wat het betekent om Vlaming te zijn. Over hoe kunstenaars als Emile Claus, Valerius De Saedeleer, George Minne en Gustave Van de Woestyne al bij het begin van de twintigste eeuw heimwee koesteren naar het Vlaanderen van hun dromen. Ook de werken van James Ensor, Rik Wouters en Léon Spilliaert konden nergens anders ter wereld tot stand komen dan hier, in 'le plat pays'. En na de Eerste Wereldoorlog brengen Constant Permeke, Gust. De Smet, Frits Van den Berghe of Edgard Tytgat de kijk van kunstenaars 'van hier' op de wereld 'van hier'. Zo is dit boek een zoektocht naar wat Vlaanderen is, was, of kan zijn. Aan de hand van essays, gedichten en mijmeringen wekt OER de brede culturele context van het Vlaamse belle époque en het interbellum weer tot leven. Daarbij gaan ook kunstenaars, academici, verzamelaars en opiniemakers van vandaag op zoek naar hun 'roots'. Want het verleden is springlevend. OER gaat over u en mij.

The project takes its name from the demand for the transfer of power and other things to the newly independent Indonesia in 1945. It travels through time, from European colonial occupation through the development of the republican state to the trans-national contemporary cultures of today. It looks at the various international exchanges that happened in the territories of contemporary Indonesia through the images and ideas of artists. These exchanges were of different kinds: trade, culture, religion, ideology and war. They produced different results: violence; oppression; racism; creativity; spiritual awakening; and other things. The ideologies and struggles of modernity are common ways in which Indonesia has been depicted by others and has also defined itself over the period. As this modern period recedes into history, the project will seek ways to remember how it has influenced contemporary understanding and ask the current generation of artists to look back in order to rewrite the past and potentially create the conditions for a different future. The catalogue and the exhibition will follow a broad chronological narrative, allowing readers and visitors to learn more about how huge archipelago has changed over the past two centuries and to observe how it has responded and adapted to different influences originating both from inside and outside the island.
