Het boek De spektakelmaatschappij (La société du spectacle, 1967) was van grote invloed op de studentenprotesten van de jaren zestig. In de film die hij daar later van maakte, becommentarieert Guy Debord, activist en grondlegger van de avant-gardebeweging Situationisme, de (erotische) found footage, waarbij hij gebruikmaakt van de nog steeds actuele teksten uit zijn boek.

Moderne samenlevingen zijn een 'ontzaglijke opeenhoping van spektakels. Al wat direct werd geleefd, heeft zich verwijderd in een representatie.' (…) 'De werkelijkheid ontstaat in het spektakel, en het spektakel is werkelijk.' De schijnwereld van de consumptiemaatschappij reduceert ons met behulp van de illusies van reclame tot toeschouwers die steeds verder van zichzelf vervreemd zijn geraakt.

Debord gebruikte film als een middel om revolutionaire theorieën te introduceren en om de afschaffing van het kapitalisme te versnellen. Zijn belangrijkste strategie was ‘détournement’, bestaande kunstwerken in een nieuwe context presenteren. Hij toont in zijn woeste collage niet alleen fragmenten uit klassieke films, zoals Nicholas Ray's Johnny Guitar (1954) en Orson Welles’ Mr. Arkadin (1955), maar ook reclamebeelden, nieuws en archiefmateriaal.

Dutch artist Jacqueline de Jong creates bold works that combine humour, eroticism, violence, and political commitment using her exuberant style and figuration. Since the early 1960s, De Jong has embraced the figurative image as a space for confusion and subversion. She belongs to a group of artists who reintroduced narration by borrowing elements from pop culture, cinema, and illustration—all the while mixing the absurd with the mysterious. With a penchant for experimentation, De Jong plays with shape, style, and pictorial idioms in order to unfold an idiosyncratic and subversive body of work.Born in the Netherlands in 1939, de Jong travelled extensively across Europe coming into contact with many avant-garde movements. She was part, for instance, in the radical Situationist International group, whose intention was to put an end to the “Society of the Spectacle” and consumer culture. While active as a painter, she was also editor and graphic designer of The Situationist Times.
