Abstract

Between 1914 and 1918, war experiences are not limited to front and rear. There is also the military occupation, suffered by nearly 10 million French and Belgians. Hunger, anguish, deprivation and weariness are the conditions of this particular situation where gender complementarity and antagonism of war are mixed: intimate relations are born between women and men who in other circumstances would never have But these relationships are not just a revolt of love against hatred. The wave of rape that accompanies the invasion of August 1914 contributes to terrorize the civilian population. And prostitution is booming in the following years. Whatever their nature, these relations do not leave the occupied indifferent: for four years, the female body is the subject of incessant tensions in the occupied country. "Sources of contamination" for some, "women in Boches" for others, those who frequent the enemy are the cost of their choice. Ostracized under the occupation, shorn at liberation, then disappeared once the peace returned.Cent years after the end of the war, "Women in Boches" is the first work to look into the history of these women.--Les Belles Lettres.
