Museums of applied arts were founded in the 19th century in conjunction with the great art and applied exhibitions arranged with the purpose of improving standards of industrial production through international comparison. The Finnish Museum of Applied Arts was established in 1873 with Carl Gustav Estlander, professor of aesthetics, as its prime mover. The aim was to create a model collection for the use of the School of Arts and Crafts which had been set up two years earlier, and also to offer general public examples of high-quality industrial art. The present publication is a concise introduction to the recent history of Finish design. The picture captions shed light on the cultural background from which the objects emerged.
