The application of digital technologies to historical newspapers have changed the research landscape historians were used to. An Eldorado? Despite undeniable advantages, the new digital affordance of historical newspapers also transforms research practices and confronts historians with new challenges. Drawing on a growing community of practices, the impresso project invited scholars experienced with digitised newspaper collections with the aim of encouraging a discussion on heuristics, source criticism and interpretation of digitized newspapers. This volume provides a snapshot of current research on the subject and offers three perspectives: how digitisation is transforming access to and exploration of historical newspaper collections; how automatic content processing allows for the creation of new layers of information; and, finally, what analyses this enhanced material opens up. ‘impresso - Media Monitoring of the Past’ is an interdisciplinary research project that applies text mining tools to digitised historical newspapers and integrates the resulting data into historical research workflows by means of a newly developed user interface. The question of how best to adapt text mining tools and their use by humanities researchers is at the heart of the impresso enterprise.

Over the last four centuries, historians have increasingly turned to images in their attempts to understand and visualize the past. In this wide-ranging and engrossing book, a distinguished art historian surveys the various ways that they have adopted for making use of this material, and he examines the specific objects that became available to them through excavation, the creation of private collections and public museums, easier means of travel, and the startling displacements brought about by vandalism and art exhibitions. Francis Haskell begins by discussing the antiquarians of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries who brought to light and interpreted as historical evidence coins, sculptures, paintings discovered in the catacombs beneath Rome and other relics surviving from earlier ages. He explains that, in the eighteenth century, historians gradually began to acknowledge the significance of such visual sources and to draw on them in order to validate and give colour to their narratives or to utilize them as foundation stones for a new branch of learning - the history of culture. Later writers followed the example of Michelet in making inferences from the visual arts to indicate the whole mentality of an age, while (more erratically) others saw in them the harbingers of political, religious or social upheavals. Haskell concludes by discussing those cultural historians of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Burckhardt and Huizinga above all, who did not merely give the visual arts a prominent and necessary place in their interpretations of the past, but in some ways actually interpreted the past through the visual arts.

Belgian artist Philip Aguirre y Otegui (b. 1961) is particularly known for his sculptures, installations and monumental works in public space. Less well known is his large body of drawings and graphic works. For Aguirre drawing is essential, allowing him to think and analyse the world: “I draw therefore I think.” From a young age, the print room at the Museum Plantin-Moretus in Antwerp was an important source of inspiration for Aguirre. A selection of his drawings and graphic work is featured in this book, published on the occasion of his exhibition L’Invitation au Voyage at the Museum Plantin-Moretus in 2022–23. Philip Aguirre invited Simon Njami to write an essay for this book. The two met in 2010, during preparations for the SUD triennial, organised by doual’art in Douala, Cameroon. Njami was the triennial’s artistic director while Aguirre realised the monumental Théâtre-Source Didier Shaub. Simon Njami (b. 1962) is a writer, independent curator, lecturer and art critic, as well as co-founder of Revue Noire.
