Our contemporary, globalised society demands new forms of listening. But what are these new forms? Stefan Östersjö challenges conventional understandings of the ways musicians listen. He develops a transmodal understanding of listening that is situated in the body - a body that is extended by its mediation through musical instruments and other technologies. Listening habits can turn these tools - and even the body itself - into resistant objects or musical Others. Supported by extensive multimedia documentation and drawing on examples from the author's own artistic projects spanning electronics, intercultural collaboration, and ecological sound art, this volume enables musicians to learn how to approach musical Others through alternative modes of listening and allows readers to discover artistic methods for intercultural collaboration and ecological sound art practices. This book is closely linked to a series of cutting-edge artistic works, including a triple concerto recorded with the Seattle Symphony and several video works with ecological sound art. It represents the analytical outcomes of artistic research projects carried out in Sweden, the UK, and Belgium between 2009 and 2015.

En novembre 2010, l'Académie royale de Belgique et le Collège Belgique ont organisé sous le titre « Musique et Sciences de l'Esprit », un colloque de psychologie cognitive consacré à la musique en collaboration avec l'ESCOM (European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music). Cette association a été créée en 1990 par divers chercheurs européens, à l'initiative d'Irène Deliège, musicienne de formation, docteur en psychologie de l'Université de Liège et alors directrice de l’unité de recherche en psychologie de la musique au sein du service de psychologie expérimentale du Professeur Marc Richelle. Irène Deliège est bientôt devenue secrétaire générale de l'ESCOM. Elle a créé en 1997 une revue internationale, Musicae Scientiae, qui a pu paraître grâce à l'appui du FNRS. Elle a mené elle-même des travaux originaux d'une grande rigueur scientifiquequi lui ont valu une réputation internationale. Le Colloque de l'Académie a été organisé à l'occasion de son départ à la retraite de l'ESCOM (à 76 ans), alors que la revue lui offrait un numéro spécial préparé en son honneur. Le Colloque a été organisé en coordination par l'Académie et l'ESCOM avec la participation à parts égales de membres de l'ESCOM et des quatre classes de l'Académie. Les organisateurs ont souhaité contribuer ainsi à un dialogue entre spécialistes de la musique, musiciens ou musicologues et représentants des disciplines de la psychologie de la musique. Cette publication veut être une introduction à la psychologie cognitive de la musique pour des lecteurs de langue française, car la littérature sur cette matière est jusqu'ici très majoritairement en langue anglaise. C'est aussi pourquoi, alors que le Colloque s'est déroulé en français et en anglais avec traductions simultanées, les actes ici publiés paraissent en français seulement.
