Abstract

From a dovecot in the Dutch village of Dorst to the Concert Hallin Bruges, from an art gallery in Whitechapel to the City Archives of Bordeaux, the oeuvre on which Robbrecht en Daem Architects has worked since its foundation in 1975 has developed a variety and maturity that stands out on the international stage. This insightful book tells the story of Paul Robbrecht, Johannes Robbrecht, and Hilde Daem from the 1980s: their research and interests, their lost souls, and their successes. Drawing on new and unpublished visual material, a picture and project accordion shows a wide selection of 63 projects that are divided into five key themes from different perspectives.

Abstract

The new pavilion in the Middelheim sculpture park in Antwerp houses a series of ceramic sculptures by German artist Thomas Schütte. Ghent-based architects Robbrecht & Daem are the designers of the half-open pavilion, which they named 'The House'. Schütte's fragile sculptures are a perfect fit for the nature and spirit of the pavilion's architecture, which is specially designed to cast a protective veil over vulnerable artworks. This book tells the story of the unique collaboration between the sculpture park, the architects and the artist.00.

Abstract

Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem have been active as architects in the Belgian city of Ghent since 1975. Their work moves between the local traditions of Flemish building and a cosmopolitanism acquired, in the main, as a result of their collaborations with international artists on exhibition and museum spaces. Their thirty-five years in the profession are enough to reveal a mature body of work attentive to context and local technique, yet one aimed at going beyond the frontiers of their country. Their buildings address different typologies, from cultural buildings, spaces for art and public spaces to conversions of old offices, in which painstaking construction with traditional materials and schemes that are simple in layout and of great spatial richness inscribe their work within a certain central-European tradition of the ordinary.Read more

Abstract

Five well-known graduates of the class of 1974 of the St Lucas Institute in Ghent, Marie-José Van Hee, Paul Robbrecht & Hilde Daem, Christian Kieckens and Marc Dubois can be considered as leading architects of their generation. To the present-day, their professional careers and legacy have been of great importance to the development of Flemish architecture. In their early works and writings, they established a distinct architectural language, rooted in historical knowledge and with a reflection to art and craftsmanship. Architecture was singled out as a spatial phenomenon with an autonomous logic grounded in inhabitation and experience. This generation represents a significant turn towards architectural autonomy in Flanders which resonated with similar international developments in the late 1970s. Moreover they played a decisive role in the emancipation and professionalization of the architectural culture in Flanders. Exhibition: De Singel, Antwerp, Belgium (12.02-05.06.2016).
