Bij de herbestemming van kerken speelt architectuur een centrale rol. Niet alleen omdat zij in deze context cultuurmedium bij uitstek is, maar ook omdat ze een verfrissend perspectief kan bieden, een onbevangen kijk op een beladen werkelijkheid. Soms komt het voor alsof kerken voor de bredere maatschappij nog hooguit door hun architectuur betekenis hebben. Maar de laatste jaren duiden suggesties om kerken bijvoorbeeld een nieuw gebruik te geven als ‘stilteplek’ toch weer op een bekommernis om het religieuze aspect. Ook worden kerken steeds breder erkend als plaatsen van opbouw van gemeenschap, en wordt daarom de voorkeur gegeven aan publieke vormen van nieuw gebruik. In dit essay doet architect Frank Vandepitte een poging tot een meer consistente benadering van de culturele betekenis van kerken, en gaat hij in op de vraag wat we daar vandaag mee aan kunnen. Hij ontwikkelt zijn intuïtie dat kerken, over levensbeschouwelijke verscheidenheid heen, de actuele cultuur raken in veeleer tere aspecten van haar functioneren, en dat zij in die zin zelfs een appèl tot haar richten. Zijn gedachtegang leidt tot vragen omtrent hoe secularisering wordt verstaan, en tot een tweevoudig inzicht: vooreerst dat er zich in secularisering vandaag een (nood tot) verdere ontvoogding aandient, en verder dat zowaar kerken zélf daarin van betekenis kunnen zijn.

Situated at the crossroads of missionary history, imperial history and colonial architecture, this volume examines the architectural staging and spatial implications of the worldwide expansion of Christianity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By focusing on specific architectural fragments, analysing the intersection of Christian edifices in colonial and traditional urban settings or unravelling the social understanding of missionary places, each chapter strives to understand the agency of missionary spaces. Bringing together scholars from different disciplines and fields, this book aims to centre those missionary spaces by approaching them not merely as décor around and within which the missionary encounter was acted, but by making them part and parcel of it. Through its approach, Missionary Spaces provides a new paradigm for scrutinising the ‘spatial turn’ for missionary histories and contributes to the increased attention across the humanities to space, place, and location since the late 1990s. Space does not occur as an historical given, but as a social construction to be analysed, while at the same time having explanatory value of its own. This book focuses on Africa and the Chinese Region with contributions on Burundi, China, Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, and Taiwan.

Although largely overlooked in studies of architectural history, church architecture in a Gothic idiom outlived its 19th century momentum to persist worldwide throughout the 20th century and into the new millennium.0'Global Gothic' presents a first systematic worldwide understanding of "Gothic" in contemporary architecture, both as a distinct variation and as a competitor to recognized modern styles. The book?s chapters critically discuss Gothic?s various manifestations over the past century, describing and illustrating approaches from Gothic Revival living traditions in the former British Empire and original Gothic appropriation in Latin America to competitions of European builders in former Asian and African colonies.
