Abstract

The study of Information Systems (IS) design is an essential part of the education of IS students and professionals. The purpose of this book is to provide a thorough reference on Design Science Research (DSR), and it comes from two authors closely identified with DSR - Alan Hevner and Samir Chatterjee. As founders of the Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology (DESRIST) annual conference, and as leading educators and researchers in the field, these authors, along with several invited contributors , are uniquely qualified to create this easy-to-read, easy-to-understand, and easy-to-apply text/reference. Suitable for graduate courses in IS, computer science, software engineering, engineering design and other design-oriented fields, it can be used as a core text or a reference for doctoral seminars in DSR. IS faculty and researchers will find much of value here as well. It requires no extensive background in design and can be appreciated by practitioners working in IS or technology design. Its 18 chapters are all individually referenced, and two appendices provide a reprint of the seminal 2004 MISQ paper by Hevner, March, Park, and Ram, as well as a list of exemplar papers in Design Science. The book provides a thorough introduction to DSR, a look at DSR in IS, examinations of DSR frameworks and design theory, and a look at the key principles of DSR in IS. Other chapters look at design for software-intensive systems, people and design, the past and present of software designs, evaluation methods, focus-group use, design creativity, and a design language for knowledge management systems. Later chapters explore integrating action research with design research, design science in management disciplines, a critical realist perspective of DSR in IS, a taxonomic look at design of emerging digital services, the dissemination of DSR, and, finally, a look at the future for DSR in IS.

Abstract

Cloud computing continues to emerge as a subject of substantial industrial and academic interest. Although the meaning and scope of "cloud computing" continues to be debated, the current notion of clouds blurs the distinctions between grid services, web services, and data centers, among other areas. Clouds also bring considerations of lowering the cost for relatively bursty applications to the fore. Cloud Computing: Principles, Systems and Applications is an essential reference/guide that provides thorough and timely examination of the services, interfaces and types of applications that can be executed on cloud-based systems. The book identifies and highlights state-of-the-art techniques and methods for designing cloud systems, offers balanced coverage of related technologies that collectively contribute towards the realization of cloud computing, and presents mechanisms and schemes for linking clouds to economic activities. With an emphasis on the conceptual and systemic links between cloud computing and other distributed computing approaches, this text also addresses the practical importance of efficiency, scalability, robustness and security as the four cornerstones of quality of service. Topics and features: Explores the relationship of cloud computing to other distributed computing paradigms, namely peer-to-peer, grids, high performance computing and web services Presents the principles, techniques, protocols and algorithms that can be adapted from other distributed computing paradigms to the development of successful clouds Includes a Foreword by Professor Mark Baker of the University of Reading, UK Examines cloud-practices and applications, and highlights early deployment experiences Elaborates the economic schemes needed for clouds to become viable business models This book will serve as a comprehensive reference for researchers and students engaged in cloud computing. Professional system architects, technical managers, and IT consultants will also find this unique text a practical guide to the application and delivery of commercial cloud services. Dr. Nick Antonopoulos is Professor and Head of the School of Computing at the University of Derby, UK. Dr. Lee Gillam is a Lecturer in the Department of Computing at the University of Surrey, UK.

Abstract

Composition of Embedded Systems: Scienti?c and Industrial Issues TheMontereyWorkshopsserieswas initiatedin 1992byDavidHislop withthe purpose of exploring the critical problems associated with cost-effective development of hi- quality software systems. During its 14-year history, the Monterey Workshops have brought together scientists that share a common interest in software development - search serving practical advances in next-generation software-intensive systems. Each year is dedicated to a particular topic of critical importance. In the past years, workshop topics were Networked Systems: Realization of Reliable Systems on Unreliable N- worked Platforms (2005 in Laguna Beach, California), "Software Engineering Tools: Compatibility and Integration" (2004 in Vienna), " Engineering for Embedded S- tems: From Requirements to Implementation"(2003 in Chicago), "Radical Innovations of Software and Systems Engineering in the Future" (2002 in Venice), "Engineering Automation for Software Intensive System Integration" (2001 in Monterey). th The 14 Monterey Workshop was held in Paris, France, during October 16-18, 2006. Context of the 2006 Monterey Workshop Distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems are notoriously hard to design, imp- ment, and validate. The complexity of a typical system found in many critical - plications in civil and military aviation, transportation systems, and medical devices exceeds the capabilities of existing developmentand veri cation technologies. Com- nies spend enormous amounts of time and resources on veri cation and validation of DRE systems they develop and yet, despite their best efforts, hard-to- nd errors show up in deployed products.

Abstract

The database technology landscape has been changing rapidly over the last few years. The server-based relational databases, which were so successful in solving the data-storage problem for traditional client/server and web-based applications, are no longer able to meet the requirements of newer applications, such as handheld devices, appliance-based solutions, and distributed applications. Berkeley DB is not a new technology that was designed to meet the requirements of this new breed of applications, but it is flexible enough to be used in these applications nevertheless. Berkeley DB doesn't fulfill all the requirements of these appli- tions, so new database technologies will evolve to fill the void. However, its versatility and flexibility will certainly influence the design of any new database product. This book's target audience ranges all the way from developers who don't know anything about Berkeley DB to fairly knowledgeable users. Therefore, I expect that not all readers will be interested in reading the entire book. I have given a brief outline of each chapter below to help you decide which chapters you may want to read or skip. Chapter 1: This chapter offers a general introduction to Berkeley DB. It includes a brief history of its development and a basic description of its architecture. If you're already familiar with Berkley DB, you can skip this chapter.

Abstract

Performance problems are rarely "problems" per se. They are more often "crises" during which you're pressured for results by a manager standing outside your cubicle while your phone rings with queries from the help desk. You won't have the time for a leisurely perusal of the manuals, nor to lean back and read a book on theory. What you need in that situation is a book of solutions, and solutions are precisely what Oracle Database 11g Performance Tuning Recipes delivers. Oracle Database 11g Performance Tuning Recipes is a ready reference for database administrators in need of immediate help with performance issues relating to Oracle Database. The book takes an example-based approach, wherein each chapter covers a specific problem domain.
