Abstract

This handbook is the definitive compendium of the methods, results, and current initiatives in modern set theory in all its research directions. Set theory has entered its prime as an advanced and autonomous field of mathematics with foundational significance, and the expanse and variety of this handbook attests to the richness and sophistication of the subject. The chapters are written by acknowledged experts, major research figures in their areas, and they each bring to bear their experience and insights in carefully wrought, self-contained expositions. There is historical depth, elegant development, probing to the frontiers, and prospects for the future. This handbook is essential reading for the aspiring researcher, a pivotal focus for the veteran set theorist, and a massive reference for all those who want to gain a larger sense of the tremendous advances that have been made in the subject, one which first appeared as a foundation of mathematics but in the last several decades has expanded into a broad and far-reaching field with its own self-fueling initiatives.

Abstract

The maturing of the field of data mining has brought about an increased level of mathematical sophistication. Such disciplines like topology, combinatorics, partially ordered sets and their associated algebraic structures (lattices and Boolean algebras), and metric spaces are increasingly applied in data mining research. This book presents these mathematical foundations of data mining integrated with applications to provide the reader with a comprehensive reference. Mathematics is presented in a thorough and rigorous manner offering a detailed explanation of each topic, with applications to data mining such as frequent item sets, clustering, decision trees also being discussed. More than 400 exercises are included and they form an integral part of the material. Some of the exercises are in reality supplemental material and their solutions are included. The reader is assumed to have a knowledge of elementary analysis. Features and topics: • Study of functions and relations • Applications are provided throughout • Presents graphs and hypergraphs • Covers partially ordered sets, lattices and Boolean algebras • Finite partially ordered sets • Focuses on metric spaces • Includes combinatorics • Discusses the theory of the Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension of collections of sets This wide-ranging, thoroughly detailed volume is self-contained and intended for researchers and graduate students, and will prove an invaluable reference tool.

Abstract

This collection of articles is devoted to fuzzy as well as rough set theories. Both theoriesarebasedonrigorousideas,methodsandtechniquesinlogic,mathem- ics, and computer science for treating problems for which approximate solutions are possible only, due to their inherent ambiguity, vagueness, incompleteness, etc. Vast areas of decision making, data mining, knowledge discovery in data, approximatereasoning, etc., aresuccessfully exploredusing methods workedout within fuzzy and rough paradigms. By the very nature of fuzzy and rough paradigms, outlined above, they are related to distinct logical schemes: it is well-known that rough sets are related to modal logicsS5andS4(Orl owska, E., Modal logics in the theory of infor- tion systems, Z. Math. Logik Grund. Math. 30, 1984, pp. 213 ?.; Vakarelov, D., Modal logics for knowledgerepresentationsystems,LNCS 363,1989,pp. 257?.) and to ?nitely-valued logics (Pagliani, P., Rough set theory and logic-algebraic structures. In Incomplete Information: Rough Set Analysis,Orlo wska, E., ed., Physica/Springer, 1998, pp. 109 ?.; Polkowski, L. A note on 3-valued rough logic accepting decision rules, Fundamenta Informaticae 61, to appear). Fuzzy sets are related to in?nitely-valued logics (fuzzy membership to degree r? [0,1]expressingtruthdegreer)(Goguen,J.A.,Thelogicofinexactconcepts, Synthese18/19,1968-9,pp.325?.;Pavelka,J.,OnfuzzylogicI,II,III,Z. Math. Logik Grund. Abstract

Principles of Terahertz Science and Technology aims to elucidate the fundamentals of THz technology and science for potential new users. It surveys major techniques of generating, detecting, and manipulating THz waves and also discusses a number of essential processes where THz waves interact with physical, chemical, and biological systems. This book serves as an introduction to THz technology for new researchers in various fields. Many different disciplines, such as ultrafast spectroscopy, semiconductor device fabrication, bio-medical imaging and more, involve the recent development of THz technology. It is necessary to lay down a strong, common foundation among researchers, so that communication can proceed smoothly. Previous THz research activities have concentrated on generation and detection, but the focus has now shifted to practical applications of this technology, such as high-speed optoelectronic signal processing and molecular spectroscopy. Drawing upon years of practical experience and using numerous examples and illustrative applications Yun-Shik Lee discusses The major techniques of generating, detecting, and manipulating THz waves Essential processes where THz waves interact with physical, chemical, and biological systems Medical Applications of T-Ray Imaging including, optical properties of human tissue, cancer diagnostics, reflective imaging of skin burns and detection of dental caries Principles of Terahertz Science and Technology is an ideal book for applied physicists, microwave engineers, biomedical engineers, electrical engineers, and analytical chemists interested in the fundamentals and applications of THz engineering.
