Abstract

Since the first works introducing the aluminum intercalated clay family in the early 1970s, interest in the synthesis of pillared interlayered clays has increased tremendously, especially research into the properties and applications of new synthesis methods. The need for solids that could be used as cracking catalysts with larger pores than zeolitic materials has spurred the synthesis of new porous materials from clays. This book reviews the properties and applications of pillared clays and other layered materials used as catalysts, focusing on: - the acidity of pillared clays and the effect it has on catalytic performance - the use of pillared clays as supports for catalytically active phases, and the use of the resulting solids in environmentally friendly reactions - the comparison between the reactions of pillared clays and anionic clays.

Abstract

The volumes of this classic series, now referred to simply as "Zechmeister" after its founder, L. Zechmeister, have appeared under the Springer Imprint ever since the series' inauguration in 1938. The volumes contain contributions on various topics related to the origin, distribution, chemistry, synthesis, biochemistry, function or use of various classes of naturally occurring substances ranging from small molecules to biopolymers. Each contribution is written by a recognized authority in his field and provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the topic in question. Addressed to biologists, technologists, and chemists alike, the series can be used by the expert as a source of information and literature citations and by the non-expert as a means of orientation in a rapidly developing discipline.

Abstract

Instant Notes titles focus on core information and are designed to help undergraduate students come to grips with a subject quickly and easily. 'Instant Notes in Medicinal Chemistry' provides concise yet comprehensive coverage for undergraduates studying medicinal chemistry as part of a science, pharmacy or medical course. It is a truly multidisciplinary subject involving such subject specialities as organic chemistry, pharmacology, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, toxicology, genetics and computer modelling. This book concentrates on the fundamental principles of medicinal chemistry and assumes no more than elementary background of chemistry or biology.

Abstract

Wastewater treatment technology is undergoing a profound transformation due to far-reaching changes in regulations governing the discharge and disposal of hazardous pollutants. Electrochemistry for the Environment first lays down the fundamentals of environmental electrochemistry, introducing the basic techniques in selecting electrode materials and fabricating them, followed by the theoretical analysis of the electrochemical processes and the green electrochemical operation. Then it discusses the electrochemical technologies in water/wastewater treatment using BDD before moving on to an examination of the established wastewater treatment technologies such as electro-coagulation, -flotation, and-oxidation. Additionally, emerging technologies such as electrophotooxidation, electrodisinfection, and electrochemical technologies in sludge and soil treatment are analyzed. This book is an excellent reference for electrochemists, chemical engineers, environmental engineers, civil engineers, and also for those in industry evaluating and implementing new technologies.

Abstract

We are living in a period of major structural and political transitions. The Post-Cold-War world has overcome the barriers, unifying Europe, sorting out Balkan situation, enlarging NATO and the EU; but, at the same time, it has shifted from a simple scenario to a more complex and unpredictable globalized context. In fact, many people wonder whether the world was more secure in the past than it is today or whether this is merely a matter of psychological perceptions. This publication is willing to answer to this question, by connecting the concepts of security and safety, focusing particularly on the transportation of dangerous materials, how to avoid the risks they pose, and how to deal with any problems that do arise.
