This book describes recent developments in hydrometeorological forecasting, with a focus on water-related applications of meteorological observation and forecasting techniques. The topic includes a wide range of disciplines, such as raingauge, weather radar, satellite, river and other monitoring techniques, rainfall-runoff, flow routing and hydraulic models, and nowcasting and Numerical Weather Prediction. Applications include flood forecasting, drought forecasting, climate change impact assessments, reservoir management, and water resources and water quality studies. The book examines how recent developments in meteorological forecasting techniques have significantly improved the lead times and spatial resolution of forecasts across a range of timescales. These improvements are increasingly reflected in the performance of the operational hydrological models used for forecasting the impacts of floods, droughts and other environmental hazards. This has led to improvements in operational decision-making, which can range from decisions within the next few hours on whether to evacuate people from properties at risk from flooding, to longer-term decisions such as on when to plant and harvest crops, and to operate reservoirs and river off-takes for water supply and hydropower schemes. The book provides useful background for civil engineering, water resources, meteorology and hydrology courses for post-graduate students, but is primarily intended as a review of recent developments for a professional audience. Key themes: floods, droughts, meteorological forecasts, hydrological forecasts, demand forecasts, reservoirs, water resources, water quality, decision support, data assimilation, probabilistic forecasts. Kevin Sene is a civil engineer and researcher with wide experience in flood forecasting, water resources and hydrometeorological studies. He has published some 45 scientific and conference papers on topics in hydrology, hydrometeorology and hydraulics, and a book Flood Warning, Forecasting and Emergency Response (Springer, 2008).

Cloud physics has achieved such a voluminous literature over the past few decades that a significant quantitative study of the entire field would prove unwieldy. This book concentrates on one major aspect: cloud microphysics, which involves the processes that lead to the formation of individual cloud and precipitation particles. Common practice has shown that one may distinguish among the following addi tional major aspects: cloud dynamics, which is concerned with the physics respon sible for the macroscopic features of clouds; cloud electricity, which deals with the electrical structure of clouds and the electrification processes of cloud and precipi tation particles; and cloud optics and radar meteorology, which describe the effects of electromagnetic waves interacting with clouds and precipitation. Another field intimately related to cloud physics is atmospheric chemistry, which involves the chemical composition ofthe atmosphere and the life cycle and characteristics of its gaseous and particulate constituents. In view of the natural interdependence of the various aspects of cloud physics, the subject of microphysics cannot be discussed very meaningfully out of context. Therefore, we have found it necessary to touch briefly upon a few simple and basic concepts of cloud dynamics and thermodynamics, and to provide an account of the major characteristics of atmospheric aerosol particles. We have also included a separate chapter on some of the effects of electric fields and charges on the precipitation-forming processes.

The book is about climate change and tropical cyclones, with an emphasis on the Indian Ocean. It highlights a probability of major changes in tropical cyclone activity across the various ocean basins. The Indian Ocean including the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are of particular concern because of the high population density along their coastlines. The book aims to reveal the scientific bases of the extreme events and the complexities inherent in combating their hazardous impact. The chapters are authored by leading experts, both from research and operational meteorological environments. The book is intended to be a first step towards an ongoing international focus on potential impact of climate change in the Indian Ocean. Topics are related to current status of operational tropical cyclone forecasting and early warning systems, tropical cyclone genesis, assessment of risk and vulnerability from tropical cyclones and disaster preparedness, management and reduction. The volume addresses all aspects of global climate change impact on tropical cyclones in the Indian Ocean, including documentation of past high impact events, archival maintenance, reconstruction and quality of best track data sets. Particularly discussed are forecasting, emergency response and impact of Tropical Cyclone Gonu which made landfall in Oman in 2007, Tropical Cyclone Nargis (Myanmar 2008) and Tropical Cyclone SIDR (Bangladesh 2007). Key themes: climate change, tropical cyclones, cyclogenesis, Indian Ocean, cyclone forecasting, SIDR Yassine Charabi is Assistant Professor at the Department of Geography at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. Her main research interests are in applied climatology and meteorology. She is the author more than 20 scientific publications including the book Elements de Climatologie Urbaine: cas de la ville de Sfax (2006, Centre de Publication Universitaire, Tunisie). Salim Al-Hatrushi is Assistant Professor at the Department of Geography at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. His research focuses on coastal processes and geomorphology. Yassine Charabi and Salim Al-Hatrushi were in the scientific organizing committee of the First International Conference on Indian Ocean Tropical Cyclones and Climate Change, co-sponsored by The World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

This book introduces the reader to advanced methods used in the computer-based modelling of fluid processes. This includes nonhydrostatic processes such as breaking internal waves and density-driven convection, but the model code is also used to simulate an El-Niño event! The book contains 25 practical exercises, using freely available Open-Source software suites, which are widely used by the scientific community. In this book, the art of hydrodynamic modelling is made available and transparent to a wider readership. An attractive byproduct of the book is that results are animations rather than still images. Model codes and animation scripts for all exercises are supplied on a website. The reader can adopt model codes for own independent studies

In recent decades there has been a growing awareness of how intricate the interactions are between human beings and the environment. Fortunately, progress has been made in understanding this relationship, and new technologies have been effective in addressing environmental problems. However belatedly, there has been an acknowledgment of the incompatibility of the world's finite resources with humankind's increasingly greater needs for them, and of how such a challenge demands broadened collaboration among engineers, social scientists, politicians and financial powers. Global agreement that the essential issues of the twenty-first century cannot be solved by any one discipline has led to the concept of sustainability. The transdisciplinary contributions selected for inclusion in this book address these concerns with an overview of the diverse fields of study related to sustainability. This collection of work is intended to pave the way for further collaboration among scientists and nations as well.

The world is full of color, from the blue ocean and the yellow daffodils and sunflowers in green carpeted meadows to the majestic purple mountains in the distance and brightly hued coral reefs off the edges of tropical coasts. But what is color, exactly? Why do we see things in different colors? Do we all see the same colors? Like the surface of our planet, the sky above us offers us an endless palette of color, a visual feast for the eyes. Besides atmospheric phenomena such as sunsets and rainbows, there are the many varied worlds of the Solar System, which we can spy through our telescopes, with their subtle colorings of beige and blue and green. Faraway star systems have suns that come in shades ranging from red and yellow to blue and white. Scientists even often use "false colors" to enhance the features of images they take of structures, such as the rings of Saturn and Jupiter's clouds. This book, with its clear explanations of what makes the sky such a colorful place and in its great wealth of pictures, dazzles and delights while informing. Learn what makes the sky blue and our Sun yellow. Learn about all the quirky atmospheric events that color our world. And finally, learn how to see, really see, what's around you and appreciate and enjoy it.
