Abstract

Abstract

Neurocutaneous diseases are a wide group of conditions that affect the nervous system but appear as lesions of the skin. Some of the more common entities have variable forms of expression that can confuse the diagnosis; for the rare conditions it is difficult to find descriptions in the literature. Recent insights into their cellular, biochemical and molecular genetic bases have shown the essential need for a new nosology and updated genotype-phenotype correlations. The book provides an authoritative source of knowledge about these difficult problems and bridges the gap between clinical recognition and the new molecular medicine. The editors, distinguished clinicians and geneticists, assembled an internationally renowned group of collaborators, many of them the experts who first described a particular disorder or established its present accepted definition. They have written a practical, comprehensive guide to the recognition, investigation and management of more than 60 recognised phakomatoses.

Abstract

In recent years the relevance of non-invasive bioimaging techniques in the field of melanoma screening has steadily increased. In the new era of clinicoimaging diagnosis, reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) will have a major impact on the diagnosis and management of neoplastic and inflammatory skin diseases.   This book focuses on the use and significance of in vivo RCM for non-invasive high-resolution imaging of the skin. All of the chapters in this hands-on guide are generously illustrated with numerous confocal images and structured in a reader-friendly way. The contents include: ¢          detailed information on the most relevant and up-to-date aspects of RCM, ¢          schematic drawings summarizing and explaining the most important RCM criteria, and ¢          a chapter specifically devoted to bridging the gap between dermoscopy, RCM, and histopathology. At the end of each chapter, core messages recapitulate the most pertinent aspects.   Reflectance Confocal Microscopy for Skin Diseases will be a valuable resource for all physicians involved in the diagnosis and treatment of neoplastic and inflammatory skin diseases

Abstract

Abstract

Dermatological clinical skills, unlike the diagnostic skills in other branches of medicine, are generally neglected in medical schools and take a long time to master, even though skin problems comprise 20-30% of primary care visits. In Dermatology Skills for Primary Care: An Illustrated Guide, a widely experienced dermatologist (Dr. Trozak) and two family physicians (Drs. Tennenhouse and Russell) seek to correct this deficiency by teaching the basic diagnostic and therapeutic skills used by dermatologists and demonstrating their application in daily practice. Using extensive illustrations and an excellent library of color photographs, the authors provide an overview of basic skills and cover 33 common dermatological conditions encountered by primary care clinicians every day. Writing in a simple, logical style clearly understandable to the nondermatologist, they discuss the full range of dermatological disorders, such as dimple warts, rosacea, scabies, erythrasma, epidermal/dermal lesions, freckles, moles, malignant melanoma, common skin cancers, shingles, acne, and atopic dermatitis, among others. Up to date and comprehensive, Dermatology Skills for Primary Care: An Illustrated Guide offers clinicians an authoritative and easy-to-use resource that will not only improve basic dermatological skills, but will also provide the broader foundation clinicians need when managing troubling skin disorders.

Abstract

The demand for outpatient cutaneous surgery procedures has increased at a rapid rate over the last several decades. Cosmetic, oncology, and reconstructive procedures are being performed by primary care physicians and a variety of specialists in different disciplines such as dermatology, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, and otolaryngology. As the number of cutaneous surgery procedures rises, so will the rate of complications, which are inevitable and occur even with the most skilled and meticulous surgeons. This comprehensive text will enable the practicing physician to formulate a preoperative strategy to not only prevent complications before they occur but also to properly diagnose and manage complications when they arise, allowing the physician to provide optimal care to the patient.

Abstract

Although there are numerous technical-scientific books on breast cancer in the global bibliography, such books deal exclusively with the nature of the disease in majority populations of the Western societies, with little or no reference to the nature of the disease in the minority populations in such societies. Similarly, the nature of breast cancer in black women of the less privileged societies, and in women of ethnic groups living in countries of similar socio-economic status, is virtually unknown. For various epidemiological reasons, breast cancer incidence is rapidly increasing in these counties, more so than currently is the case in developed countries. Thus, the global burden of cancer is shifting gradually to these areas of the world, and may equal or even surpass the breast cancer burden in the Western societies within the foreseeable future. This book is unique because it bucks the trend of virtually all other breast cancer books by addressing specifically the breast cancer experience of women of African descent and their lifestyle counterparts in other societies of the world.
