Abstract

As technology matures, communication system operation regions shift from mic- wave and millimeter ranges to sub-millimeter ranges. However, device perf- mance at very high frequencies suffers drastically from the material de?ciencies. As a result, engineers and scientists are relentlessly in search for the new types of materials, and composites which will meet the device performance requirements and not present any de?ciencies due to material electrical and magnetic properties. Anisotropic and gyrotropic materials are the class of the materials which are very important in the development high performance microwave devices and new types composite layered structures. As a result, it is a need to understand the wave propagation and radiation characteristics of these materials to be able to realize them in practice. This book is intended to provide engineers and scientists the required skill set to design high frequency devices using anisotropic, and gyrotropic materials by providing them the theoretical background which is blended with the real world engineering application examples. It is the author's hope that this book will help to ?ll the gap in the area of applied electromagnetics for the design of microwave and millimeter wave devices using new types of materials. Each chapter in the book is designed to give the theory ?rst on the subject and solidify it with application examples given in the last chapter. The application examples for the radiation problems are given at the end of Chap. 5 and Chap. 6 for anisotropic and gyrotropic materials, respectively, after the theory section.

Abstract

Analytical and Hybrid Methods in the Theory of Slot-hole Coupling of Electrodynamic Volumes arose from the original research results, never before published, first obtained by the authors at Karazin Kharkov National University, Ukraine. Impetuous development of technical opportunities of PC for the last twenty years, and a powerful set of numerical methods available in the arsenals of investigators have forced the working-outs connected with the search of analytical solutions of radiophysical problems backward. However, at present, the fact is evident that optimal use of computer calculations should be based on application of analytical methods of boundary problems solution. These methods allow to increase PC use efficiency and also expand their calculation abilities to solve complex electrodynamic problems. The authors’ experience in the development of analytical methods to solve the problems of diffraction of waveguide electromagnetic waves on slot coupling holes serves as a useful tool to readers interested in both the field of theoretical electrodynamics and the field of practical workings-out of multi-functional waveguide devices and systems using slot-coupling elements. Topics covered in this book are: problem formulation and initial integral equations the averaging method analytical solution of the integral equations for a current induced magnetomotive forces method for analysis of coupling slots in waveguides resonant iris with the slot arbitrary oriented in a rectangular waveguide stepped junction of the two rectangular waveguides with the impedance slotted iris This book is intended for academic and industrial researchers involved in Microwave Techniques, as well as advanced students studying Radiophysics and Applied Electrodynamics.

Abstract

RF Power Amplifiers for Mobile Communications fits in the quest for fully integrated CMOS transceivers. The book tackles both high efficiency and high linearity PA design in low-voltage CMOS, and has a strong emphasis on theory, design and implementation. The book is conceived as a design guide for those actively involved in the design of CMOS wireless transceivers. RF Power Amplifiers for Mobile Communications starts from the basic theory of power amplification from the viewpoint of CMOS integration. The design of switching RF power amplifiers in CMOS is explored and CMOS PA design at low supply voltage using parallel amplification is discussed. Combining both efficiency and linearity is one of the major issues in CMOS PA design for wireless and mobile communications and is subsequently tackled. Different linearization techniques and approaches are discussed and polar modulation is clarified in greater detail. Finally, two CMOS PA implementations are thoroughly covered. RF Power Amplifiers for Mobile Communications offers the reader an intuitive insight in Power Amplification as well as the necessary mathematical background. The book is essential reading for RF design engineers and researchers in the field and is also suitable as a text book for an advanced course on the subject.

Abstract

Visual perception is the most important of the human senses. Lack of visual perception is one of the main causes of accidents. The safety of vehicle traffic depends on how well automotive lighting supports the visual perception of the driver. This book explains the fundamentals of visual perception, like e.g. physiology of eye and brain, as well as those of automotive lighting technology, like e.g. design of headlamps and signal lights. It is an interdisciplinary approach to a fastly evolving field of science and technology, answering questions like "How does information enter our brain when driving a car?" and "What are the benefits and dangers of LED signal lighting?".

Abstract

Smart energy management, both at design time and at run time, is indispensable in modern radios. It requires a careful trade-off between the system’s performance, and its power consumption. Moreover, the design has to be dynamically reconfigurable to optimally balance these parameters at run time, depending on the current operating conditions. Energy Scalable Radio Design starts by describing an energy-driven design strategy, tackling these implementation challenges for wireless communication systems. The strategy minimizes energy consumption and optimizes reconfigurability at all consecutive design steps, from system level down to circuit level. In addition, a novel implementation concept of "nested FLEXmodules" is introduced at digital RT-level, enabling highly scalable implementations, with minimal energy overhead. Energy Scalable Radio Design continues by applying this design strategy to the design of an energy-efficient, highly scalable, pulsed UWB receiver, suitable for low data rate communication and sub-cm ranging. This book meticulously covers the different design steps and the adopted optimizations: System level air interface selection, architectural/algorithmic design space exploration, algorithmic refinement (acquisition, synchronization and ranging algorithms) and circuit level (RTL) implementation based on the FLEXmodule-concept. Measurement results demonstrate the effectiveness and necessity of the energy-driven design strategy.

Abstract

MEMS are rapidly moving from the research laboratory to the mar ketplace. Many market studies indicate not only a tremendous market potential of MEMS devices; year by year we see the actual market grow as the technology matures. In fact, these days, many large silicon foundries have a MEMS group exploring this promising technology, including such giants as INTEL and Motorola. Yet MEMS are fundamentally different from microelectronics. This means that companies with an established track record in these branches need to adapt their skills, whereas companies that want to enter the "miniaturization" market need to establish an entirely new set of capabil ities. The same can be said of engineers with classical training, who will also need to be educated toward their future professional activity in the MEMS field. Here are some questions that a company or technologist may ask: I have an existing product with miniaturization market poten tial. Which technology should I adopt? What are the manufacturing options available for miniaturiza tion? What are the qualitative differences? How do we maintainamarketleadforproductsbased onMEMS? Is there CAD support? Can we outsource manufacturing? Which skills in our current capability need only adaptation? What skills need to be added? Professors Jan Korvink and Oliver Paul have set out to answer these questions in a form that addresses the needs of companies, commercial practitioners, and technologists.
