Issues related to gender and sexual diversity in schools can generate a lot of controversy, with many educators and youth advocates under-prepared to address these topics in their school communities. This text offers an easy-to-read introduction to the subject, providing readers with definitions and research evidence, as well as the historical context for understanding the roots of bias in schools related to sex, gender, and sexuality. Additionally, the book offers tangible resources and advice on how to create more equitable learning environments. Topics such as working with same-sex parented families in elementary schools; integrating gender and sexual diversity topics into the curriculum; addressing homophobic bullying and sexual harassment; advising gay-straight alliances; and supporting a transgender or gender non-conforming student are addressed. The suggestions offered by this book are based on recent research evidence and legal decisions to help educators handle the various situations professionally and from an ethical and legally defensible perspective.

This is not a traditional book about the family. In a very essential way, it is a book about being a woman in relation to the current form of the family under capitalism in North America. The authors are three women whose interest in the family stems out of their own unique and varied experiences. The text is comprised of three autoethnographies that look at the family from radically distinct perspectives. Each section is rooted in the author’s own personal and professional life experience. The book explores multi-cultural family therapy, living inside a divorcing family, the role of child protective services, issues of class and race in a family’s identity, how media and pop psychology shape our view of the family, and what it is to be female in a patriarchal family system. All three women are currently working with young people in various capacities. Each section offers new ways to work together with young people to reshape the family so that it better serves those who live within it.

Vrouwenrechten. Het is een thema dat helaas nog altijd brandend actueel is. Overal ter wereld zijn vrouwen het slachtoffer van tal van vormen van discriminatie en van ongelijkheid, zowel in hun beroepsleven als op familiaal, sociaal of politiek vlak. De rechten waarvoor vrouwen wereldwijd vechten, zijn dan ook erg uiteenlopend. In 1994 gaf de internationale gemeenschap tijdens de Conferentie van Caïro het startsein om de strijd voor betere vrouwenrechten op te voeren. Twintig jaar later maken Marleen Temmerman en Tine Maenhout een stand van zaken op en vertellen waar vrouwenrechten nu eigenlijk echt over gaan.Journaliste Tine Maenhout trok naar het opvangcentrum voor slachtoffers van geweld van Marleen Temmerman in Kenia. De verhalen die ze daar optekende, vormden de basis voor een zoektocht naar de historische en culturele wortels die aan de grondslag liggen van geweld tegen vrouwen. Want vrouwenrechten zijn een stuk complexer dan ze op het eerste gezicht lijken. Pas als die complexiteit ten volle wordt onderkend, kunnen er echt stappen vooruit gezet worden. Aan de hand van gesprekken met vooraanstaande experts proberen Tine en Marleen daarom het begrip 'vrouwenrechten' verder scherp te stellen.
