This volume deals with many aspects of the physical and chemical limnology of the Salton Sea, California’s largest lake and a lake that may soon to be the object of a multi-billion dollar restoration project. Formed in 1905 by an accidental breaching of outtake structures on the Colorado River, and maintained since then by large and steady inflows of agricultural wastewaters, it has long served as an important habitat for fish and waterbirds and as a major recreational area for people. Highlly eutrophic and with a salinity that is steadily rising and now nearly 50 g/L, it is a lake in great trouble. Most fish species have disappeared, and large fish and bird dieoffs have been common in recent decades. Many of the papers in this volume represent studies undertaken with the aim of informing the re-engineering of this ecosystem so that its value to wildlife and man can be restored or enhanced.

Solvation Effects on Molecules and Biomolecules provides a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art molecular modeling methodologies which are most relevant to handling solvation properties of molecules and biomolecules. The quantum mechanics and molecular simulations herein are presented by international experts. The chapters contain detailed reviews of the developments of various techniques, combining quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics methods which are commonly called upon to deal with various solvation problems including free energy studies and supercritical solvents. Modern perspectives of the latest methods used for studying molecular properties, structure, and spectroscopy in liquid systems, (including solvation free energies of different physico-chemical processes) are presented in detail. By outlining the essential theoretical framework and technical details, together with practical applications, Solvation Effects on Molecules and Biomolecules serves as an essential guide in the promotion of interactions between theoretical and experimental groups. Solvation Effects on Molecules and Biomolecules thus forms a powerful resource for graduate students and fledgling researchers and is also an excellent companion for research professionals engaged in computational chemistry, material science, nanotechnology, physics, drug design, and molecular biochemistry (as well as attracting advanced undergraduate students working in these fields).

The book describes and assesses current concepts for long-term disposal of highly radioactive waste. Different types of rock are discussed and assessed with respect to practical difficulties in construction of a repository, and the efficiency in isolating radioactive waste. Safety matters are most important and are treated in the respective chapters and in a final, conclusive chapter. Cost issues and related quality matters are discussed for the case of constructing a virgin repository and repositories in the form of converted abandoned mines.
