This is the very first book to deal with sex and gender differences in drug therapy - an increasingly recognized medical need. It starts with an overview on S/G in clinical syndromes and a documentation of the medical and socioeconomic damage caused by gender specific adverse drug effects. Part I covers S/G differences in pharmacokinetics. Researchers will be satisfied by the detailed discussion of the mechanisms of S/G differences in drug effects that represents cutting edge science and includes interaction of drugs with sex hormones, genomic and epigenetic mechanisms. It also covers S/G in drug development, in animal models and clinical development and S/G in drug prescriptions. Part II targets S/G differences in drug effects in cardiovascular, pulmonary, CNS, neuromuscular, neuropsychiatric and metabolic diseases, in cancer, inflammation, and rheumatic diseases, in bacterial and retroviral infections, thrombosis, embolism. New drugs will be discussed.

New Drug Development, 2nd Edition, is a reader-friendly introduction to clinical trials that is written specifically for entry-level professionals in the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, and contract research organization (CRO) industries. It is also excellent reading for seasoned clinical research professionals who wish to refresh their knowledge in areas outside their immediate fields of expertise, and for students of clinical research, pharmacy, medicine, nursing, and allied health professions. While the main focus is on preapproval clinical trials, the book adopts a lifecycle drug development approach, placing these trials in the overall continuum from drug discovery to postmarketing surveillance. It therefore contains brief discussions of medicinal chemistry, nonclinical research, drug manufacturing, and the latest techniques for gathering information concerning adverse drug reactions. This edition builds on the success of the first edition by keeping the discussions that were most helpful to readers, and adding new chapters addressing important contemporary topics in drug development. The chapters dealing with the design and analysis of clinical trials in the first edition received praise from many sources. This new edition incorporates extended discussions of the operational aspects of conducting various kinds of trials, ranging from highly specialized and relatively small cardiac safety studies to very large, multi-site Phase III trials run in several different countries.

A pharmaceutical scientist's approach toward solubility enhancement of a poorly water-soluble molecule typically includes detailed characterization of the compound's physiochemical properties, solid-state modifications, advanced formulation design, non-conventional process technologies, advanced analytical characterization, and specialized product performance analysis techniques. The scientist must also be aware of the unique regulatory considerations pertaining to the non-conventional approaches often utilized for poorly water-soluble drugs. One faced with the challenge of developing a drug product from a poorly soluble compound must possess at minimum a working knowledge of each of the abovementioned facets and detailed knowledge of most. In light of the magnitude of the growing solubility problem to drug development, this is a significant burden especially when considering that knowledge in most of these areas is relatively new and continues to develop. There are numerous literature resources available to pharmaceutical scientists to educate and provide guidance toward formulations development with poorly water-soluble drugs; however, a single, comprehensive reference is lacking. Furthermore, without access to a vast journal library, the detailed methods used to implement these approaches are not available. The objective of this volume is therefore to consolidate within a single text the most current knowledge, practical methods, and regulatory considerations pertaining to formulations development with poorly water-soluble molecules.

In the view of most experts pharmacology is on drugs, targets, and actions. In the context the drug as a rule is seen as an active pharmaceutical ingredient and not as a complex mixture of chemical entities of a well defined structure. Today, we are becoming more and more aware of the fact that delivery of the active compound to the target site is a key. The present volume gives a topical overview on various modern approaches to drug targeting covering today’s options for specific carrier systems allowing successful drug treatment at various sites of the body difficult to address and allowing to increase the benefit-risk-ratio to the optimum possible.

Biopharmaceutical Drug Design and Development, Second Edition, updates the widely successful first edition, published in 1999. This new, expanded edition investigates the dozens of new biopharmaceutical drugs that have become available since the publication of the first edition. Among the drugs discussed are ones in the categories of monoclonal antibodies for in-vivo use, cytokines, growth factors, enzymes, immunomodulators, thrombolytics, and immonotherapies including vaccines. Additionally, the volume examines new and emerging technologies, such as bioinformatics, DNA microarrays, transgenics, therapeutic gene delivery, stem cells, nucleic acid-based therapeutics, and macromolecular drug delivery. Authors also study pharmacogenetics in the clinic and changes in biologic drug approval at the FDA. Biopharmaceutical Drug Design and Development, Second Edition, is a worthy sequel in the discussion on the dynamic, exciting field of biotechnology.
