Abstract

Abstract

With a Foreword by Dr Hinca Pandjaitan, Executive Director, Indonesia Lex Sportiva Instituta, Djakarta. This book is the first to focus on the often raised and discussed question whether there is a separate discipline of international sports law and, if so, which criteria should be used to identify it. What belongs to it and what does it involve? So far, the debate has not run along any structured lines, meaning that different points of view and angles have never been systematically compared amongst experts in order to attempt to reach pertinent conclusions. In the present book highly relevant and critical English-language articles on the question What is Sports Law? are brought together with the extended papers and results of the 2010 Djakarta Conference The Concept of Lex Sportiva Revisited . The expertise and views of the contributors present an important step in the right direction and form a solid basis for further discussion amongst sports lawyers, academics and researchers on the fascinating Lex Sportiva phenomenon. It is essential reading for all those with an interest in sport and the continually evolving interface and interaction that exists between sport and the law, as well as the different ways how they influence each other. Prof.Dr. Robert Siekmann is Director of the ASSER International Sports Law Centre, The Hague and Professor of International and European Sports Law at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Dr Janwillem Soek is Senior Researcher at the ASSER International Sports Law Centre. The book appears in the ASSER International Sports law Series, under the editorship of Prof.Dr. Robert Siekmann, Dr. Janwillem Soek and Marco van der Harst LL.M.

Abstract

This book consists of a number of case studies about interventions in schools to promote the inclusion of pupils referred to a local authority Educational Psychology Service (EPS) in the north of England. The aim is to provide accounts which do not shirk from describing ˜failures' as well as ˜successes' and which reflect the general ˜messiness' of this kind of work. They are written as ˜stories' from the point of view of an educational psychologist who regards himself as a critical reflective practitioner whose professional practice is grounded in a democratic, inclusive philosophy. The methodology of the book draws on the qualitative research tradition in social science and education, in particular ethnography and action research, and makes a unique contribution to the role of ˜storying' in this kind of research. The author feels that his approach represents a challenge to conventional constraints on research in his own profession which prevent the development of a more open dialogue about the role and purpose of psychological interventions to promote inclusion. The worked examples of practical strategies in mainstream provide insights which should be of interest to all support professionals, teachers, educationalists and others concerned with inclusion of pupils described as having ˜special educational needs'.

Abstract

"This book examines the global scope of tourism-related grabbing of land and other natural resources. Tourism is often presented as a peaceful and benevolent sector that brings people from different cultural backgrounds together and contributes to employment, poverty alleviation, and global sustainable development. This book sheds light on the lesser known and much darker side of tourism as it unfolds in the Global South. While there is no doubt that tourism has been an engine of economic growth for many so-called developing countries, this has often come at the cost of widespread dispossession and displacement of Indigenous and non-indigenous communities. In many countries of the Global South, tourism development is increasingly prioritised by governments, businesses, international financial institutions and donors over the legitimate land and resource rights of local people. This book examines the actors, drivers, mechanisms, discourses and impacts of tourism-related land grabbing and displacement, drawing on more than thirty case studies from Latin America and the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East and the Southwest Pacific. The book provides solid grounds for an informed debate on how the different actors are responsible for the adverse impacts of tourism on land rights infringements, how they can proactively avoid land grabs and displacements, , what forms of resistance have been deployed against tourism-related land grabs and displacement, and how those who have violated local land and resource rights can be held accountable. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars of land and resource grabbing, tourism studies, development studies and sustainable development more broadly, as well as policymakers and practitioners working in those fields"--

Abstract

Equal access to services and public places is now required by law in many countries. In the case of the visually impaired, it is often the use of assistive technology that facilitates their full participation in many societal activities ranging from meetings and entertainment to the more personal activities of reading books or making music. In this volume, the engineering techniques and design principles used in many solutions for vision-impaired and blind people are described and explained. Features: • a new comprehensive assistive technology model structures the volume into groups of chapters on vision fundamentals, mobility, communications and access to information, daily living, education and employment, and finally recreational activities; • contributions by international authors from the diverse engineering and scientific disciplines needed to describe and develop the necessary assistive technology solutions; • systematic coverage of the many different types of assistive technology devices, applications and solutions used by visually impaired and blind people; • chapters open with learning objectives and close with sets of test questions and details of practical projects that can be used for student investigative work and self-study. Assistive Technology for Vision-impaired and Blind People is an excellent self-study and reference textbook for assistive technology and rehabilitation engineering students and professionals. The comprehensive presentation also allows engineers and health professionals to update their knowledge of recent assistive technology developments for people with sight impairment and loss.

Abstract

There is an increasing interest in understanding learning and knowledge development when visitors attend informal institutions, such as museums, science centers, aquariums and botanical gardens. But in what ways do visitors develop new knowledge, skills and awareness about displayed issues in these kinds of settings and how does the exhibition environment affect and scaffold learning processes? In this book, the authors turn their attention to visitors’ and staff members’ actions and dialogues during the visits in order to identify and study learning situations. A common approach is the use and development of socio-cultural and cultural-historical frameworks and theories as means for coming closer to the significance of interactions at different levels and in different contexts. The individual chapters cover learning interactions in relation to staff members’ roles and identities, family visits, exhibitions as resources for professional development and school visits.

Abstract

While the trafficking of women for prostitution has been the subject of numerous studies, Prostitution and Human Trafficking is the first book to focus on demand as a key factor in the equation. In order to do this, the editors adopted a double approach: on the one hand, a "virtual ethnography" was developed that focused on the analysis of specialized forums on the web and that used an anonymous internet questionnaire as interview method. On the other, fieldwork allowed national research teams to collect interviews and data from likely clients of trafficked prostitutes, prostitutes themselves, from police officers involved and from national experts. Who is the client of trafficked prostitution? What fuels the demand for trafficked prostitution as opposed to other forms? Which are the most effective policies for what type of prostitution? The research in this book aims to answer these questions with an innovative approach. The editors have explored the hidden world of human trafficking for prostitution and profiled its clients. In doing so, they have refuted some common stereotypes about clients while inspiring the elaboration of balanced guidelines for managing prostitution, protecting the victims and thus tackling its undesired trafficking component. Prostitution and Human Trafficking is highly recommended for researchers in the fields of criminology, sociology and law as well as for the law enforcement and legal communities. The book is also recommended for organizations and policymakers involved in fighting organized crime in general and human trafficking in particular.
