The first of a planned six volumes of Gurwitsch's writings, this volume contains, above all, the English translation of his Esquisse de phénoménologie constitutive, the text based on his four lecture courses at Institute d'Histoire des Sciences et des Techniques at the Sorbonne during the 1930s. These lectures were regularly attended by Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The book relates Husserlian or constitutive phenomenology to modern first philosophy and the philosophy of the human as well as the natural sciences and was nearly finished when Gurwitsch had to flee to the United States before Germany conquered France. In addition, this volume contains what is in effect Gurwitsch's autobiographical sketch, critical reviews of works by Gaston Berger, Jean Hering, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Maurice Pradines, and Ives Simone, members of the French intellectual milieu of the 1930s when French phenomenology initially developed, and also two originally unpublished essays from that period. Finally, there are three essays and two reviews from Gurwitsch's American period in which phenomenological philosophy and especially his revised account of the noema is also placed in historical perspective.

This volume brings together essays by leading phenomenologists and Husserl scholars in which they engage with the legacy of Edmund Husserl's philosophy. It is a broad anthology addressing many major topics in phenomenology and philosophy in general, including articles on phenomenological method; investigations in anthropology, ethics, and theology; highly specialized research into typically Husserlian topics such as perception, image consciousness, reality, and ideality; as well as investigations into the complex relation between pure phenomenology, phenomenological psychology, and cognitive science.

This volume begins with Schutz's sketch of how Husserl influenced him. It shows how phenomenological theory of the social sciences differs from positivistic approaches, and presents Schutz's theory of relevances--a key feature of his own phenomenology of the social world. It contains exchanges between Schutz and Eric Voegelin, Felix Kaufmann, Aron Gurwitsch, and Talcott Parsons, and presents, for the first time, Schutz's incisive criticisms of T.S. Eliot's theory of culture.

In his last work, "Crisis of the European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology", Edmund Husserl formulated a radical new approach to phenomenological philosophy. Unlike his previous works, in the "Crisis" Husserl embedded this formulation in an ambitious reflection on the essence and value of the idea of rational thought and culture, a reflection that he considered to be an urgent necessity in light of the political, social, and intellectual crisis of the interwar period. In this book, James Dodd pursues an interpretation of Husserl's text that emphasizes the importance of the problem of the origin of philosophy, as well as advances the thesis that, for Husserl, the "crisis of reason" is not a contingent historical event, but a permanent feature of a life in reason generally.

The potentiality of phenomenological aesthetics is enormous, many figures have contributed to it during a time span of over a century, but this is the first work thoroughly to show its breadth, depth, and continuing fecundity. Moritz Geiger, Roman Ingarden, Fritz Kaufmann, Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Mikel Dufrenne are the central figures and receive substantial treatment. A score of other influential individuals, including Antonio Banfi, Simone de Beauvoir, Oskar Becker, Jacques Derrida, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Martin Heidegger, Michel Henry, Dietrich von Hildebrand, Maurice Natanson, Nishida Kitaro, Jose Ortega y Gasset, Jan Patocka, Paul Ricoeur, Heinrich Rombach, Max Scheler, Alfred Schutz, Gustav Spet, and France Veber also have entries devoted to them. In addition, there are over two dozen entries on such topics such as dream, empathy, enjoyment, imagination, sensation, on style, ecology, gender, and interculturality, and then on areas including architecture, film, and theater. The introduction includes an extensive sketch of the history of phenomenological investigation in this sub-discipline of philosophy. All entries are written by the best relevant specialists, all the entries have bibliographies, and a selected bibliography for the whole is appended. This handbook will be the foundation for many more decades of investigation.

Whereas for the wider public Jan Patocka is known mainly through the circumstances of his death in Prague, on March 13, 1977, after long interrogations by the Communist secret police, as a defender of human and civic rights in Czechoslovakia and one of the first spokespersons of the Charter 77 movement, the international philosophical community sees in him an important and inspiring thinker, who elaborated in an original way the great wellsprings and impulses of European thought - mainly Husserl's phenomenology and Heidegger's philosophy of existence. Patocka also reflected on the future of humanity in a globalized world and laid the foundations of an original philosophy of history. His work is a subject of lively philosophical discussion especially in French and German-speaking countries, but also, more recently, in the Hispanic world, North America and the Far East. In April 2007 scholars interested in Patocka's philosophy gathered in Prague from around the world to commemorate his centenary and the thirtieth anniversary of his death. The conference explored the significance of his work and its growing influence on contemporary philosophy. This volume presents in English language selected papers from the centenary conference

Beyond their remarkable technical accomplishments, the new directions taken by the sciences in recent decades call for renewal of their epistemological basis. The purpose of this book is to show that Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology, if properly re-examined, provides the required framework for such an epistemology. This re-examination is both critical and constructive. (i) The absolute subjectivization or the full naturalization of consciousness must be rejected. (ii) The necessarily transcendental character of phenomenology is put to work in the search for a systematic connection between the modes of theoretical objectivation and the apprehension of the phenomenal world by intentional consciousness. A new look at some of the fundamental issues opened up by Husserl is thus suggested by recent advances in the theory of perception, attention, and the will; foundations of mathematics and formal logic; space-time or quantum physics.
