Abstract

The Little Black Book of Neuropsychology: A Syndrome-Based Approach Mike R. Schoenberg and James G. Scott, editors From translating the patient’s medical records and test results to providing recommendations, the neuropsychological evaluation incorporates the science and practice of neuropsychology, neurology, and psychological sciences. The Little Black Book of Neuropsychology brings the practice and study of neuropsychology into concise step-by-step focus—without skimping on scientific quality. This one-of-a-kind assessment reference complements standard textbooks by outlining signs, symptoms, and complaints according to neuropsychological domain (such as memory, language, or executive function), with descriptions of possible deficits involved, inpatient and outpatient assessment methods, and possible etiologies. Additional chapters offer a more traditional approach to evaluation, discussing specific neurological disorders and diseases in terms of their clinical features, neuroanatomical correlates, and assessment and treatment considerations. Chapters in psychometrics provide for initial understanding of brain-behavior interpretation as well as more advanced principles for neuropsychology practice including new diagnostic concepts and analysis of change in performance over time. For the trainee, beginning clinician or seasoned expert, this user-friendly presentation incorporates ‘quick reference guides’ throughout which will add to the practice armamentarium of beginning and seasoned clinicians alike. Key features of The Black Book of Neuropsychology: Concise framework for understanding the neuropsychological referral. Symptoms/syndromes presented in a handy outline format, with dozens of charts and tables. Review of basic neurobehavioral examination procedure. Attention to professional issues, including advances in psychometrics and diagnoses, including tables for reliable change for many commonly used tests. Special “Writing Reports Like You Mean It” section and guidelines for answering referral questions. Includes appendices of practical information, including neuropsychological formulary. The Little Black Book of Neuropsychology is an indispensable resource for the range of practitioners and scientists interested in brain-behavior relationships. Particular emphasis is provided for trainees in neuropsychology and neuropsychologists. However, the easy to use format and concise presentation is likely to be of particular value to interns, residents, and fellows studying neurology, neurological surgery, psychiatry, and nurses. Finally, teachers of neuropsychological and neurological assessment may also find this book useful as a classroom text. "There is no other book in the field that covers the scope of material that is inside this comprehensive text. The work might be best summed up as being a clinical neuropsychology postdoctoral residency in a book, with the most up to date information available, so that it is also an indispensable book for practicing neuropsychologists in addition to students and residents…There is really no book like this available today. It skillfully brings together the most important foundations of clinical neuropsychology with the 'nuts and bolts' of every facet of assessment. It also reminds the more weathered neuropsychologists among us of the essential value of neuropsychological assessment…the impact of the disease on the patient’s cognitive functioning and behavior may only be objectively quantified through a neuropsychological assessment." Arch Clin Neuropsychology (2011) first published online June 13, 2011 Read the full review acn.oxfordjournals.org “...The authors have truly reached their goal of making this book useful for a wide variety of professionals at different stages in their career. In relation to neuropsychologists there is something for everyone, from the graduate student, to the clinician studying for the ABPP/ABCN examination, to the seasoned professional who is seeking out a good refresher on various topics pertinent to neuropsychology. With the wealth of information it provides, the title of this book, The Little Black Book of Neuropsychology seems almost an oxymoron, as the information it offers is anything but little”. Abstract

Regardless of etiology, such as accident, tumor, stroke or assault, acquired brain injury presents numerous challenges for survivors, caregivers and treating professionals. Interdisciplinary and integrated evaluations, treatment, and management can mean the difference between successful recovery and unfortunate outcomes. The first book to present a comprehensive team approach to rehabilitation of ABI survivors, Acquired Brain Injury gives medical and clinical specialists a deeper understanding of not only each others' roles, but also their complementary functions. -The medical management of ABI—neurosurgery, neurology, physiatry—and the medical specialties involved—neuropsychiatry, neurourology, and neuro-optometry -In-depth discussion of the roles of occupational, speech-language, and balance therapies -Separate chapters on nursing, neuropsychology, and case management -Behavioral and emotional challenges common to individuals with ABI -The importance of addressing family needs -Long-term challenges -Case examples throughout illustrating a wide range of injuries, symptoms, and stages of recovery Based on the editors’ combined experience of more than 40 years in the neuro-rehabilitation field, this comprehensive volume clarifies rehabilitation goals and processes for the physician, rehab specialist, the advanced student, and patients’ advocates. With ABI so prevalent—roughly 1.5 million new cases per year—this book couldn’t be more timely.

Abstract

In hun publicaties leest men allerlei ernstige voorstellen.

Abstract

Within the complex neuronal network of the nervous system, neuron-to-neuron communication occurs mainly through chemical synapses, where the presynaptic nerve terminal releases neurotransmitters that control the function of postsynaptic neurons by acting on postsynaptic receptors. Recent decades have brought groundbreaking new developments and a wealth of knowledge to this field. In Molecular Mechanisms of Neurotransmitter Release, leading experts provide concise, up-to-date information on all major molecular mechanisms involved, with complete background information and figures and diagrams to further elucidate key concepts or experiments. Comprehensive and cutting-edge, Molecular Mechanisms of Neurotransmitter Release is sure to provide a learning tool for neuroscience students, a solid reference for neuroscientists, and a source of knowledge for all those who have a general interest in the ever-evolving field of neuroscience.

Abstract

Abstract

The discovery of microRNAs has revealed an unexpected and spectacular additional level of fine tuning of the genome and how genes are used again and again in different combinations to generate the complexity that underlies for instance the brain. Since the initial studies performed in C.elegans, we have gone a far way to begin to understand how microRNA pathways can have an impact on health and disease in human. Although microRNAs are abundantly expressed in the brain, relatively little is known about the multiple functions of these RNA molecules in the nervous system. Nevertheless, we know already that microRNA pathways play major roles in the proliferation, differentiation, function and maintenance of neuronal cells. Several intriguing studies have linked microRNAs as major regulators of the neuronal phenotype, and have implicated specific microRNAs in the regulation of synapse formation and plasticity. Dysfunction of microRNA pathways is also slowly emerging as a potential important contributor to the pathogenesis of major neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. These novel insights appear to be particular promising for the understanding of the very frequent and badly understood sporadic forms of these diseases as compared to the genetic forms. Thus, the better understanding of the implications of this novel field of molecular biology is crucial for the broad area of neurosciences, from the fundamental aspects to the clinic, and from novel diagnostic to potentially therapeutic applications for severe neurological and maybe psychiatric diseases.
