Abstract

This is the ?rst volume of a series of edited books whose aim is to collect contributed papers in a framework that can serve as a dictionary of names of individuals who have made contributions to the discipline of MMS (Me- anism and Machine Science). This dictionary project has the peculiarity that, through descriptions of the ideas and work of these individuals, the papers will illustrate mainly technical developments in the historical evolution of the individual ?elds that today de?ne the scope of MMS. Thus the core of each contribution will be a survey of biographical notes describing the efforts and experiences of these people. Finding appropriate technical experts as authors for such papers and - couraging them to write them has been a challenge; it is a demanding and time-consuming effort to produce such in-depth articles that delve deeply into the historical background of their topics of expertise. This ?rst volume of the dictionary project has been possible thanks to the invited authors who have enthusiastically shared the initiative and have spent time and effort in prep- ing papers that have the novel characteristics of survey and historical notes. The papers in this volume cover the wide ?eld of the History of Mechanical Engineering with speci?c focus on MMS. I believe that a reader who takes advantage of the papers in this book, as well as future ones, will ?nd further satisfaction and motivation for her or his work (historical or not).

Abstract

The seventh edition of Field and Service Robotics, edited by Andrew Howard, Karl Iagnemma and Alonzo Kelly, offers an eleven chapter collection of a broad range of topics spanning: design, perception and control; tracking and sensing; localization and mapping; multi-robot cooperation and human-robot interaction; mining, maritime and planetary robotics. The volume's forty-five contributions represent a cross-section of the current state of robotics research from one particular aspect: field and service applications. Pursuing technologies aimed at realizing robots operating in complex and dynamic environments, as well as robots working closely with humans, is the overarching theme running throughout this collection.

Abstract

Dynamic loads and undesired oscillations increase with higher speed of machines. At the same time, industrial safety standards require better vibration reduction. This book covers model generation, parameter identification, balancing of mechanisms, torsional and bending vibrations, vibration isolation, and the dynamic behavior of drives and machine frames as complex systems. Typical dynamic effects, such as the gyroscopic effect, damping and absorption, shocks, resonances of higher order, nonlinear and self-excited vibrations are explained using practical examples. These include manipulators, flywheels, gears, mechanisms, motors, rotors, hammers, block foundations, presses, high speed spindles, cranes, and belts. Various design features, which influence the dynamic behavior, are described. The book includes 60 exercises with detailed solutions. The substantial benefit of this "Dynamics of Machinery" lies in the combination of theory and practical applications and the numerous descriptive examples based on real-world data. T the book addresses graduate students as well as engineers.

Abstract

FSR, the International Conference on Field and Service Robotics, is a robotics Symposium which has established over the past ten years the latest research and practical results towards the use of field and service robotics in the community with particular focus on proven technology. The first meeting was held in Canberra, Australia, in 1997. Since then the meeting has been held every two years in the pattern Asia, America, Europe. Field robots are non-factory robots, typically mobile, that operate in complex, and dynamic environments: on the ground (of Earth or planets), under the ground, underwater, in the air or in space. Service robots are those that work closely with humans to help them with their lives. This book presents the results of the sixth edition of Field and Service Robotics, FSR07, held in Chamonix, France, on 9th - 12th July 2007. The conference provided a forum for researchers, professionals and robot manufacturers to exchange up-to-date technical knowledge and experience. This book offers a collection of a broad range of topics including: Underwater Robots and Systems, Autonomous Navigation for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, Climbing Robotics, Sensor Fusion.

Abstract

The International Symposium on Experimental Robotics (ISER) is a series of bi-annual meetings which are organized in a rotating fashion around North America, Europe and Asia/Oceania. The goal of ISER is to provide a forum for research in robotics that focuses on novelty of theoretical contributions validated by experimental results. The meetings are conceived to bring together, in a small group setting, researchers from around the world who are in the forefront of experimental robotics research. This unique reference presents the latest advances across the various fields of robotics, with ideas that are not only conceived conceptually but also explored experimentally. It collects contributions on the current developments and new directions in the field of experimental robotics, which are based on the papers presented at the 10th ISER held in Rio de Janeiro, July 2006.

Abstract

This book deals with the problems related to planning motion laws and trajectories for the actuation system of automatic machines, in particular for those based on electric drives, and robots. The problem of planning suitable trajectories is relevant not only for the proper use of these machines, in order to avoid undesired effects such as vibrations or even damages on the mechanical structure, but also in some phases of their design and in the choice and sizing of the actuators. This is particularly true now that the concept of “electronic cams” has replaced, in the design of automatic machines, the classical approach based on “mechanical cams”. The choice of a particular trajectory has direct and relevant implications on several aspects of the design and use of an automatic machine, like the dimensioning of the actuators and of the reduction gears, the vibrations and efforts generated on the machine and on the load, the tracking errors during the motion execution. For these reasons, in order to understand and appreciate the peculiarities of the different techniques available for trajectory planning, besides the mathematical aspects of their implementation also a detailed analysis in the time and frequency domains, a comparison of their main properties under different points of view, and general considerations related to their practical use are reported.

Abstract

Many processes and systems manifest an increasing integration of mechanical and electronic components with information processing capacity. The development of such mechatronic systems opens the way to many innovative solutions not possible with mechanics or electronics alone. Mechatronic Systems introduces these developments by considering the dynamic modelling of components together with their interactions. The whole range of elements is presented from actuators, through different kinds of processes, to sensors. Structured tutorial style takes learning from the basics of unified theoretical modelling, through information processing to examples of system development. End-of-chapter exercises provide ready-made homework or self-tests. Offers practical advice for engineering derived from experience with real systems and application-oriented research. Written by one of the World's leading experts in this progressive field, Mechatronic Systems will be of great value to advanced students working in control, electrical and mechanical engineering and in areas where such definitions are being superseded. It will also prove useful to practising engineers wanting an in-depth understanding of how these disciplines and that of information processing are becoming interlinked.

Abstract

''There is always a delightful sense of movement, vibration and life"". Theodore Robinson (1852-1896) "/ have never solved a major mechanical or interpretive problem at the keyboard. I have always solved it in my mind". Jorge Bolet (1914-1990) The idea of this book stems from the realization that scientists, not unlike laymen, should occasionally interrupt their regular work and reflect on the past, to see both the accomplishments and the drawbacks, so as to be able to plan for future research in the "proper" perspective. But an inquisitive reader may ask: Can one really document in any field, let alone mechanical vibrations (whose very name signifies change), ''where do we stand"? Did not a Greek philosopher famously claim that one cannot enter a river twice? Another, on an even more sophisticated note, added that actually it is impossible to enter a river even once! For in the process of entering, both entrant and river change. Likewise, one can argue that it is nearly impossible to answer the question posed in the title of this volume. But experience shows, despite the sage observations of the philosophers, that one does enter a river, lake, sea, or ocean. Likewise, scientists do stop (if not for a minute, for a conference) to reflect on the past, and if not in its detail, then at least in big strokes on various topics presented by the participants; questions by the listeners often change the research direction of the presenter.
