Aboutthebook The success of the information society The rapid progress of the information society in the past decade has been made possible by the removal of many technical barriers. Producing, storing, and transporting information in large quantities are no longer signi?cant problems. Producing on-line, digitized information is no longer a problem. Ever more of our commercial, scienti?c and personal information exchanges happen on-line in digital form. In the professional domain, near 100% of all o?ce documents areproducedindigitalform(evenifafterwardstheyaredistributedinpaper form), large parts of the scienti?c discourse are now taking place in digital form (with physics, computer science and astronomy taking a leading role). In the public domain, newspapers are available on-line, an increasing number of radio and television stations o?er their material on-line in streaming form and e-government is an important theme for public administration. Even in the personal area, information is rapidly moving on-line: sales of digital cameras are now higher then for analogue cameras, e-mail and on-line chat have become important channels for maintaining social relations and for personal entertainment the digital DVD is rapidly replacing the analogue video tape. Compact disk (itself already digital) is under serious pressure from on-line music in MP3 format from a variety of sources. In short: p- ductionofon-lineinformationisnowthenorminvirtuallyallareasofourlife. Storing such information in the required volumes is also no longer a problem.

Knowledge and information are among the biggest assets of enterprises and organizations. However, efficiently managing, maintaining, accessing, and reusing this intangible treasure is difficult. Information overload makes it difficult to focus on the information that really matters; the fact that much corporate knowledge only resides in employees' heads seriously hampers reuse. The work described in this book is motivated by the need to increase the productivity of knowledge work. Based on results from the EU-funded ACTIVE project and complemented by recent related results from other researchers, the application of three approaches is presented: the synergy of Web 2.0 and semantic technology; context-based information delivery; and the use of technology to support informal user processes. The contributions are organized in five parts. Part I comprises a general introduction and a description of the opportunities and challenges faced by organizations in exploiting Web 2.0 capabilities. Part II looks at the technologies, and also some methodologies, developed in ACTIVE. Part III describes how these technologies have been evaluated in three case studies within the project. Part IV starts with a chapter describing the principal market trends for knowledge management solutions, and then includes a number of chapters describing work complementary to ACTIVE. Finally, Part V draws conclusions and indicates further areas for research. Overall, this book mainly aims at researchers in academia and industry looking for a state-of-the-art overview of the use of semantic and Web 2.0 technologies for knowledge management and personal productivity. Practitioners in industry will also benefit, in particular from the case studies which highlight cutting-edge applications in these fields.

Successful healthcare problem solving often depends on immediate access to information. Unable to consult a library while in a clinical setting, healthcare practitioners and managers must learn to effectively manage knowledge and think on their toes. Knowledge Management (KM) is an ideal system to tap the tacit knowledge individuals hold and distribute this collective wisdom throughout a healthcare institution. Healthcare Knowledge Management: Issues, Advances, and Successes assembles a group of international contributors to explain KM and offer contemporary, clinically relevant lessons in organizational implementation. This book illustrates the effectiveness of KM by investigating real life healthcare-based systems that highlight the diversity of KM applications in the healthcare sector. Healthcare Knowledge Management is a uniquely integrative text—both a tutorial on concepts, theories, and research as well as a practical guide to managing and developing KM in the healthcare setting. Topics covered in this book include: -Clinical Knowledge Management – a model for primary care -The hidden power of social networks and knowledge sharing in health care -Constructing healthcare knowledge -Electronic patient records -Case studies from around the world Rajeev K. Bali, PhD, Senior Lecturer, Coventry University, UK; Leader, Knowledge Management for Healthcare Research subgroup of the Biomedical Computing Research Group (BIOCORE). Ashish N. Powerfully driven by the work practices of consulting firms, the presentation software Microsoft PowerPoint is increasingly used on all levels of business and educational communication. Nevertheless, slideware ranks among the least explored media in communication studies. This study investigates the role of PowerPoint in organizational communication, particularly in terms of a functional dilemma between its application for documentation as opposed to presentation purposes. The theoretical part of the analysis combines insights from both organizational communication studies (J. R. Taylor et al.) and social systems theory (N. Luhmann et al.). The empirical analysis shows that PowerPoint documents created for cross-project learning purposes contribute to an invisibilization rather than a visibilization of decision processes and their contingency. In the light of these results, existing efforts to promote knowledge management based on the learning-from-mistakes principle need to be reconsidered with respect to their realization in communicative practice.

In order to survive in increasing environmental turbulence and uncertainty in the business context, organizations have to reconsider and revise their strategies frequently. But not all of them manage to detect and interpret environmental changes and, if necessary, react adequately. Based on 50 interviews with top managers, Daniel Kauer studies the effects of managerial experiences on the strategic sensemaking of top management teams. He shows that it is very important to distinguish between the depth and breadth of managerial experience, as these discrete dimensions have different effects on strategic sensemaking on the individual as well as on the organizational level. While diversity represents a team’s potential to be successful in strategic sensemaking, the team must realize this potential through effective interaction. Therefore, the author also analyzes decisive interaction factors and describes how teams can best leverage their members’ experience.

Private enterprises in advanced economies have been learning to use information and communication technology (ICT) to innovate and transform their processes, products, services and business models, significantly improving productivity and competitiveness. Moreover, the ICT industry itself has become a major source of job creation and a contributor to economic growth and business transformation. A key question today is whether and how developing countries can learn to benefit from the ICT revolution, and what roles the government and private sector can play. Already, a number of developing countries have been inspired by the example of India and China, and are now seeking to jump on the outsourcing bandwagon. Nevertheless, with few exceptions in the developing world, little attention has been paid by policymakers and practitioners to invest systematically and proactively in ICT-enabled growth, poverty reduction and grassroots innovation. Most communities and small and medium-sized enterprises in developing countries, for example, face multiple constraints to adopting and leveraging this general purpose technology, and lack the capabilities for maximizing its potential. In Enabling Enterprise Transformation, Nagy Hanna draws on his rich experience of over 35 years at the World Bank and other aid agencies as a development strategist and ICT policy expert, the most current research, and best practices from around the world to provide practical tools for promoting economic and social transformation through ICT. He assesses various initiatives to develop and diffuse ICT, such as innovation funds, incubators, parks, public-private partnerships, and comprehensive promotion programs. He argues for the strategic options now open for developing countries to participate in ICT production, to deploy ICT to transform industries and services, and to leverage ICT as a new national infrastructure for improving the business environment and enhancing the competitiveness of the whole economy. The challenge for leaders in developing countries is to create such social and institutional dynamics for learning about ICT use and adaptation at many levels. Lessons gained so far from programs to build these social learning and innovation capabilities at the institutional and grassroots levels should be shared among developing countries, and a dialogue among business leaders, policymakers, development agencies, educational institutions, and the general citizenry must be advanced.

The first step towards success in a software project is to ensure a professional setup. This includes a metrics-based formal estimation process to ensure a solid foundation for project planning. Accurate estimates require quantitative measurements, ideally tool based. In addition, software project managers must also monitor and update these estimates during the project’s lifecycle to control progress and assess possible risks. Based on their many years of practical experience as software managers and consultants, Manfred Bundschuh and Carol Dekkers present a framework of value to anyone involved with software project management. They present all five ISO/IEC-acknowledged Functional Sizing Methods, with variants, experiences, counting rules and case studies, and they use numerous practical examples to show how to use functional size measurement to produce realistic estimates. Written in a highly practical style, including checklists, templates, and hands-on advice, and backed up with many pointers to both national and international metrics and standards organizations, this book is the ideal companion for the busy software project manager or quality assurance manager.
