Abstract

This is the story of a simple idea (the mouth is part of the body) and what it means in the context of the complexities in healthcare organization, care delivery, provider education, and care reimbursement, along with recommendations. Integration of Medical and Dental Care and Patient Data seeks to optimize the delivery of healthcare by stating why isolated components of healthcare delivery need to work together, by asserting how health information technology (HIT) can help these components collaborate to improve care quality and patient safety, by documenting how existing barriers stand in way of interdisciplinary collaborative practice supported by HIT, and by recommending how to remove such barriers. The book will be of immense interest to all involved in the management of dental and medical informatics systems while providing illuminating instruction to dental professionals to help them understand the considerable challenges and extensive benefits of a cohesive electronic dental record.

Abstract

This book presents the first cohesive treatment of Information Theoretic Learning (ITL) algorithms to adapt linear or nonlinear learning machines both in supervised or unsupervised paradigms. ITL is a framework where the conventional concepts of second order statistics (covariance, L2 distances, correlation functions) are substituted by scalars and functions with information theoretic underpinnings, respectively entropy, mutual information and correntropy. ITL quantifies the stochastic structure of the data beyond second order statistics for improved performance without using full-blown Bayesian approaches that require a much larger computational cost. This is possible because of a non-parametric estimator of Renyi's quadratic entropy that is only a function of pairwise differences between samples. The book compares the performance of ITL algorithms with the second order counterparts in many engineering and machine learning applications. Students, practitioners and researchers interested in statistical signal processing, computational intelligence, and machine learning will find in this book the theory to understand the basics, the algorithms to implement applications, and exciting but still unexplored leads that will provide fertile ground for future research. Abstract

A major challenge in the modeling and simulation of tumor growth is the mathematical description of living matter, which is far more complex than a mathematical description of inert matter. One critical piece of this challenge is creating multiscale models that take into account subcellular, cellular, and macroscopic levels of cancer. The complexity of these different levels requires the development of new mathematical methods and ideas, which are examined in this work. Written by first-rate researchers in the field of mathematical biology, this collection of selected chapters offers a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art mathematical methods and tools for modeling and analyzing cancer phenomena. Topics covered include: * Genetic and epigenetic pathways to colon cancer * A game theoretical perspective on the somatic evolution of cancer * Nonlinear modeling and simulation of tumor growth * Tumor cords and their response to anticancer agents * Modeling diffusely invading brain tumors * Multiphase models of tumor growth * Mathematical modeling of breast carcinogenesis * Predictive models in tumor immunology * Multiscale modeling of solid tumor growth Selected Topics in Cancer Modeling is an excellent reference for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students in applied mathematics, mathematical biology, and related fields. The book has an overall aim of quantitative, predictive mathematical modeling of solid tumor growth at all scales, from genetics all the way through to treatment therapy for patients.

Abstract

When speaking about eBusiness as applied to the healthcare market two questions arise immediately. Firstly, what is eBusiness? Secondly, why is eBusiness in healthcare different from eBusiness in other sectors? Within the arena of eBusiness in healthcare, the focus is on purchasing and selling online as the most advanced application. In this book, the Authors consider both the perspective of the healthcare providers and that of the suppliers, showing the interdependencies between the two and developing concepts for a new synergistic cooperation. eBusiness in Healthcare raises awareness of and interest in electronically mediated business processes in healthcare to a large audience including healthcare informaticians, medical business managers, clinicians, pharmacists and scientists. By taking an international approach to the topic the authors demonstrate the many similarities of eBusiness problems and their solutions among different countries which permits analysis of the differences that are often defined by the national healthcare systems and their rules. Case studies from healthcare institutions and from suppliers in the US, the UK and Germany will illustrate the achievements, barriers and future plans, thus enabling newcomers to learn from previous experience. Clinicians will gain significant insight by this book which demonstrates the interconnection between patient care processes and management issues at the level of medical supplies. The book also makes a plea for a multidisciplinary effort, to enable the right product to be procured for the right patient. As a rather new discipline, eBusiness in healthcare needs further scientific backing. Against this background, this book will not only provide answers but will also raise questions for future research. Managing change and innovation and establishing the critical mass for eBusiness in healthcare is a major undertaking. The aim of this book is to support this process.

Abstract

The Semantic Web is now a research discipline in its own right and commercial interest in applications of Semantic Web technologies is strong. The advantages of the Semantic Web lie in its ability to present and provide access to complex knowledge in a standardized form making interoperability between distributed databases and middleware achievable. Life Scientists have much to gain from the emergence of the Semantic Web since their work is strongly knowledge-based. Unambiguous, semantically-rich, structured declarations of information have long been a fundamental cornerstone of scientific discourse. To have such information available in machine-readable form makes a whole new generation of scientific software possible. The value that the Semantic Web offers to the Life Sciences is currently under appreciated. A pedagogical oasis is required for interested scientists and bioinformatics professionals, where they can learn about and draw inspiration from the Semantic Web and its component technologies. In this context this book seeks to offer students, researchers, and professionals a glimpse of the technology, its capabilities and the reach of its current implementation in the Life Sciences. This collection of representative topics, written by leading experts, documents important and encouraging first steps showing the utility of the Semantic Web to Life Science research. Semantic Web: Revolutionizing Knowledge Discovery in Life Sciences is divided into six parts that cover the topics of: knowledge integration, knowledge representation, knowledge visualization, utilization of formal knowledge representations, and access to distributed knowledge. The final part considers the viability of the semantic web in life science and the legal challenges that will impact on its establishment. This book may be approached from technical, scientific or application specific perspectives. Component technologies of the Semantic Web (including RDF databases, ontologies, ontological languages, agent systems and web services) are described throughout the book. They are the basic building blocks for creating the Semantic Web infrastructure. Other technologies, such as natural language processing and text mining, which are becoming increasingly important to the Semantic Web, are also discussed. Scientists reading the book will see that the complex needs of biology and medicine are being addressed. Moreover, pioneering Life Scientists have joined forces with Semantic Web developers to build valuable semantic resources for the scientific community. Different areas of computer science (e.g., artificial intelligence, database integration, and visualization) are also being recruited to advance this vision. The ongoing synergy between the Life Sciences and Computer Science is poised to deliver revolutionary discovery tools and new capabilities. As well as providing the background material and critical evaluation criteria for the design and use of meaningful Semantic Web implementations a multitude of examples are provided. These illustrate the diversity of life science tasks that are benefiting from the use of Semantic Web infrastructure and serve to demonstrate the great potential of the Semantic Web in the Life Sciences.

Abstract

Several theories consider the brain to be a network of neurons that process perception with simple activation functions. Real neurons, however, are far more intricate.Through reviews of literature and results from original experiments, Neural Cell Behavior and Fuzzy Logic offers a comprehensive look at these complex systems, supplying trustworthy evidence that neurons can predict the consequences of input signals and transiently change their own excitability to suit. The book also examines how fuzzy logic, the computing of perceptions, can be used to provide a theoretical description of real neuron behavior, and as a model for the "logic" the brain uses to describe environments and make decisions. This book includes sections for general and advanced readers, and will be particularly useful to neuroscience students, academics and researchers as well as to mathematicians and theoretical physicists. About the authors: Uziel Sandler is a professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics at Jerusalem College of Technology in Israel.
